Thank you all, we will leave him at home this year. My parents love him and would enjoy it x

I think you have made a very, very wise decision to leave him at home.

We have been to the South of France a few times now, not in peak time, and both my wife and I agreed we would never take Monty, our stinking working Sprocker. It gets very hot, last year near Biarritz it was around 32-36c daily, he would have hated it and we would have been constantly worried about him if left behind in the van.

Brittany/ Normandy yes, but YOU need the holiday not your dog, they don't need holidays, who would prefer the cooler climate with your parents, where I am sure he will get spoilt rotten.

Have a great one. 😀👍

It's certainly a different kind of holiday if you take your dog. We take ours, as we go for 4 weeks and it is too expensive to leave them with their usual carer for that length of time. However, they are not keen on the car, so we can only travel slowly, with breaks of a couple of days at regular intervals. It also means that there are no days out for us in interesting places.

That said, we have a relaxing and gentle time and feel much better for it on our return!

We wouldn't normally consider taking our doggies with us to France, but we are this year. Only reason being that My mum and dad are coming and it means that we can leave the Dogs with them whilst we do stuff as a family. whilst we love having our dogs with us, it can be very restricting to do anything together because we would never leave them alone in the caravan!

We have been taking our dog to France for the last 5 years. She enjoys going for swims in lakes rivers and at the beach just as much as we do!
Even though we trust her we would not leave her alone in the camper. On one campsite we would leave her in the back of the car with the rear door open in the shade, whist we went to the swimming pool, god help anyone if they tried to get in the car. At another site we would leave her attached to the swimming pool perimeter fence under a parasol.
We always exercise our dog morning and night so she is very fit and heat is not a problem. We find the French are very tolerant of dogs and she has always been welcomed in restaurants and the like.
On the return we aim to go to a vet approx. 3 days before the crossing so that it allows a bit of leaway should something unforeseen happen. This year we are considering making an advanced booking with a vet as we will be arriving at our final campsite on a Monday night befor crossing on the following Thursday.

Our son took his dog for the first time last year, and both had a great time even though it was very hot. My son always carried a collapsible water bowl and a bottle of water, andn gave the dog regular drinks.

We met up with them several times, and the dog swam in lakes, the sea, and rivers. Every time we went for a coffee (anywhere) there was either a dog water bowl already provided, or someone would bring one out for him. He was welcome in the campsite we were staying on, and the one where my son stayed, and even allowed in the campsite restaurant where the staff brought him titbits (with my son's prior permission).

I think some dogs enjoy the sun, and even the heat, provided they can always get into some shade. For some dogs sharing a holiday with their owner is better than the possible alternative of going into kennels (although I have to say our dog seemed to consider her stay in kennels as a holiday anyway)!

I took my dog to a vet in Saulieu in Burgundy just today and was charged only 15 euros ( I did have my own worm tablets ). Over the last few years I have paid as little as 11 euros and as much as 63 euros.

The necessary vet treatment seems to often be cheaper away from the Channel ports.

Almost as good as the 15 euro bill, she was fairly young, blonde, and pretty!
