I think the OP said that wi fi can be problematical, so I guess they are looking for a different solution.

I'm afraid that I can't be any help, as we don't bother with TV at all while we are away. Assuming we can get halfway decent internet, I usually check the BBC website every couple of days or so. When Brexit happened we were half way through a long trip and I used the internet to access Radio 4. Otherwise, we usually find that little has changed between leaving and getting home a couple of months later.

Radio is one of the main reasons for us having the satellite system, and Radio 4, is one of my favourites.

When in Frejus, I quite like wandering down to the wash block in the morning, with R4 playing in my ears, via my cheapy personal wireless audio system.

The signal just about makes it from the tent to the wash block.

Yep James, I don't think using the BBC SatBack service from Intelsat 907 at 27.5 West is a good idea, as it's exclusively aimed at the commercial market, as a satellite back up for the UK Terrestrial Freeview service.

Although it is regular seen being offered at Caravan shows NEC etc, were the sellers will gladly see you part with the thick end of a £1000+ or £3000+ for a fitted Dome system, for a system that you could put together yourself for under £200.

Firstly you need a satellite receiver that can handle the BISS codes.

And secondly the service will soon switch to another platform as the current satellite being used is fast comming to the end of it's serviciable life.

I did look into the service a few years back, but came to the conclusion that it would be more trouble than it's worth.

My wife and I are off to Costa Del Sol in a few weeks time, I'll ask around.

The caravan where we're staying has a Sat System for UK TV, using the Sat mentioned in my link, a local provider set it up for the English owner. He was told Brits living in Gibraltar use the same system.

Puzzle. Why do Brits who go to Spain have such a need for UK television, but Brits who go further afield and around the world get by happily without it?

As someone who has spent some time on an island, on the Pacific edge 7 degrees above the equator, and 126 degrees East of the Greenwich Meridian,I can tell you news from dear old Blighty is important, as well as some English programmes.
'Doc Martin' and 'Death in Paradise' (for example)made our lives more bearable

My plan is to change to business broadband which costs 49.99 per month for 100mb with a fixed IP address. Ill then get satellite broadband and via a secure router connect to my house from abroad. I can then use whichever tv service I choose currently virgin cable via their app on the desktop of my laptop at home using a Remote Desktop session (tight VNC or similar). Ill then be able to which anything I could at home while Im away

The op is asking for help re watching UK tv in Spain, it is not really helpful when people post that they don't watch tv or can't understand why people do.
We have used wifi on many sites in Northern Spain to watch tv via Filmon, or watchuktvabroad. If you have to pay for the wifi on the site, it is likely to be good enough.
Try to get a pitch next to a wifi mast and/or think about getting a wifi booster, like iBoost from Motorhome Wifi.

Used site Internet and film on last year but film on is no longer free, go to the app and read the reviews, it's £150 a year! Not all paid for wifi on Spanish sites is good, some are atrocious (Los gallardos if I remember rightly to name one). Currently on Los Escullos where wifi is free and very good, will try watchuktvabroad. A few sites now provide tv on the pitch but not sure what that includes, our next site, La Quinta Bella provides tv for €.50 a day, again not sure what it is yet

My reason for asking the question is because when days are short and evenings are cool a dose of uk tv in the evening is welcome. At present we rent an apartment in southern Spain but have wondered a few times why we don't take the caravan. Whether everybody likes it or not, we like to have uk tv available to watch in the evenings and it would be essential to be able to take the caravan for an extended stay. Thank you for all your opinions and advice.

We use a 1.2m dish across the middle measurement, in Spain they tend to call them 1.4 m dishes. We have used this in Javea, Benidorm, Calpe, no problem. We just use it for Freesat, I think for purely for Sky you can use a smaller dish, my knowledge of Sky is about zero so you best check. On the subject of Wi Fi I know in Benidorm and I would imagine other places where you can get off site Wi Fi on short term contracts, they are fed to your via a little square block aerial on a pole, regulars have there own equipment but it can all be rented. Folks get a good signal as well as watch TV on it.

The reality of the matter sjr66 is that using Satellite for UK Freesat in Spain is no longer an option.

That only leaves the interweb, and to be fair that is a pretty hit and miss option due to the chance's of getting a decent wi-fi (mobile) connection.

Of course there will be some campsites in Spain that offer piped UK TV to your pitch, but I bet that they are few and far between these days.

Thankfully we can still use a 1m Dish for UK Freesat down in Frejus, but it is ridiculous that we have gone from, 60cm, 80cm, to now 1m to keep up with the satellite changes over the years.

If that's not technology going backwards, I don't know what is!

I would have been happy with Sirius(Afrisat) satellite radio, the reciever was the size of a normal portable radio, with an antenna the size off a beer matt.

With Sirius you could get all the BBC Radio channels along with a bunch off UK commercial stations, I think the subscription was around £4 per month, I would have been more than happy to pay that.

Sadly the Sirius service was short lived, and ended a good ten years back or so.

We should like the Americans and Canadians have, satellite radio, in fact it even comes as standard in some cars, in the U.S.

In fact SiriusXM in the U.S. is just 5$ per month, or you can pay 30$ upfront for 6 months, or 60$ for the year.

Why Europe never continued with a satellite radio service, is a joke if not an embarrassment in this modern age.

OK satellite radio is not TV, although I always think that the picture is far better on radio than it is on TV in anycase!

Anyway help is on it's way from SpaceX with StarLink, although I am sure the cost will be more than £4 per month, but at least you will get TV as well as the interweb and phone.
Just a case of a 2 to 4 year wait, for the service to arrive.
