We've holidayed in that area many times ... and keep returning ... probably this year, again.

IMHO it's a complete waste of time to drive to the Med coast ... mostly overcrowded anyway!

The north west coast is wonderful, with areas like the Picos de Europa, which are utterly fabulous.

If you trawl through my site reviews, you'll find several in the area, within 2 hours of Santander ... quite a lot of suggestions as to what to do as well.

If you have any queries after that ... do come back, and I'll do my best to answer.

I would favour Santander over Bilbao ... unless you want to target the Pyrenees and the wonderful National Parks ... though cycling is, obviously, more challenging. As mentioned by the OP ... the Guggenheim is worth a trip from wherever you are!

If you are hell bent on the Med, then Bilbao cuts quite a few miles off the trip (compared to Santander).

Not according to Via Michelin ... Bilbao is shorter (time and distance) for both.

Bilbao/Alicante: 8.18 hours ... 791 kms
Bilbao/Barcelona: 6.25 hrs ... 606 kms

Santander/Barcelona: 7.29 hours ... 704 kms
Santander/Alicante: 9.02 hrs ... 841 kms

We stayed on the north west coast between Santander and Bilbao and neve4r again. Beautiful scenery however every few days it would pour down with rain just like the UK.

We've just been lucky then ... in ten years of visits ... in summer, seen, maybe, 15% rainy days, at the most.

It's what keeps the area green and lush, unlike most of arid Spain.

That's why it is called the Costa Verde.

Oh goodness Ian, just checked the average daily rainfall in July. In Santander it is 23 days! That is a lot. Compared with St Malo, that is only 12 days. Never thought to look at that. Rain everyday can ruin your camping trip. Thanks guys.
