We are going to France on 26 April and will follow advice on government website - written advice. Booster done, blood test done and appointment for health certificate 10 days before travel date. I would be very wary of any verbal advice/opinions from Defra staff

Friends in France have confirmed that the actual cost of the Pet Passport is 15 euros, on top of the cost of the vaccinations, microchipping, etc.

However, if your pet has already been 'done' then it does seem to be a way of cutting costs especially for poeple like us travelling regularly backwards and forwards between our houses in the Uk and France.

Yes, apparently so but if not I could be persuaded to 'share' our address with friends on here for a small glass of wine should we meet!

Some other friends have mentioned that their passport was free when they paid for the rabies injections etc.

Yes, that's what was advised. She said they've consulted with French vets on this and info and results on current passports can just be transferred across.

And yes again, a French passport would mean annual rabies boosters, which we're less than thrilled about. But then again, that ruling might ultimately be applied to passports or certificates issued here.

We're still weighing things up, but will have to decide shortly if we travel this weekend. I think we'll go, then decide about the French passport on or after 12th!

That's a question I asked, and was told it won't be a problem. I'm going to contact some vets in France tomorrow, to confirm.

I think we’ll talk about it with the French vet we generally visit, before we come home in May, and decide then. Does anyone know whether the annual rabies jab will need to be done in France or could we get it done here?

You'll need to get it done in France - but if the rabies vaccination is still within date and your pet blood test shows a positive status this will only need to be a booster.

A French vet. We no longer have a dog but about 3 years ago, when we did, we went to a vet in France for the tapeworm treatment and the relevant page in the passport was full so she just issued a new passport, there was no question of having a French address.

Looks like a French pet passport is the way forward for us. Even with an annual rabies booster (which “our” French vet said can be done in the U.K. or France) it will be cheaper and less hassle than a Health Certificate each time we travel (currently 3 or 4 times a year).
