In regard to high season just done a quick comparison on the caravan club site and in August with same outfit details Portsmouth to Caen is only £9 more than Dover Calais.

Whilst I don't doubt Pixie has had no problems driving to Portsmouth, we've had just the opposite both times we went that way. Our journeys were so much of a nightmare the first time that the second time we set off two hours earlier and still nearly missed the ferry. Only the intervention of a very sympathetic check-in clerk got us on our sailing - and not only that but on arrival (Sunday) we were told that we would have to wait until Tuesday for the next 'cheap deal' crossing! Never again after that time.

We've also found that the longer crossings are usually much more expensive than the shorter ones. And, if you miss a Dover crossing there is always another one in a hour - not three days later!

use via Michelin to plan non toll route. its prob better to use the Boulogne toll if youre going via Calais but from then on you can avoid tolls by travelling via Rouen, Caen, Rennes and Nantes, mostly motorway or dual carriageway - stick to the speed limits though lol! In our motorhome its a good 8 hours drive so travel time/day can be important. Sunday is a good day to travel.

If you can get Diesel at less than £1.26 in the UK then it is cheaper. (todays exchange rate I filled up at Super U this morning)
