Now with the 'van, it's easier to drive to the next campsite and visit the town than to make a day trip.
That's where we're at & the reason we got our van converted. Mrs health just about copes with long trips to a region & back but she doesn't like long day trips once we're there & too much hassle upping sticks with the tent. We're still likely to stay a few days somewhere but for anything we want to see outside the distance comfort zone we'll find an aire, site or wild spot nearby & stop over.

When it comes to holidays in the camper, we never travel with more than a vague idea of where we're going. We're off to the continent next month and when we come back, we'll know where we've been This is one of the great advantages of camping / caravanning in Europe. You just head off with a sense of adventure and see what happens.
In winter we do use hotels for city breaks, but in general we avoid the major attractions and explore the local area to see what we can find.

I'm tired of reality, so I'm off to look for a good fantasy.

Wow, OP I wish my camping holiday to France was as exiting as that, we just simply drive down to the same campsite in Frejus each year and pitch the tent, same pitch even, I feel quite boring now after reading your post.
Break loose Francais - do something different and unplanned and spontaneous and go without booking anything. You may even enjoy it!

Could not have put it better myself! 👍
I always thought the whole idea behind a “touring” caravan, camper van/motor home or tent was to drive off into the sunset, and go where your nose takes you.
We have never, ever, booked a site in France.

We used to do 2 or 3 different stops in anyone given break of approx. 2 weeks away however with stressful jobs we find it easier to pitch and stay.
Last year as the car was new, we flew to Milan, hired a car and stayed in a pre-erected tent on the outskirts of Rome. This was the beginning of August and the campsite (Camping Tiber) was practically empty. Masses of empty pitches and they were all huge!
Due to seeing a rat under our tent, we paid a little extra and moved into a caravan for the rest of our holiday but that holiday was fantastic. Rome was amazing.
We have already decided to do something similar next year (instead of driving) but this time to do Naples, Sorrento and the Amalfi coast. I'm just having trouble finding campsites in that area!
Just for future reference, It would be really helpful if someone could explain to me how I insert a photo. thanks :-)

Thank you all for your kind help recently with my thread about the Dordogne. After all the effort, 2 hrs before we left home for the tunnel crossing, we looked at the weather and changed our minds - we wanted more sun and therefore headed to our normally stomping ground in the South of France!
You missed out. One afternoon of showers in the 10 days here - and they introduced the equivalent of a hosepipe ban.
We're just back from the Dordogne. !8th July through to 13th August - Only the last few days were a bit cooler the rest of the time it was sun all the way really apart from on real downpour which was over in about an hour and a couple of showers overnight.
