Thanks Kenny, I hadn't seen your blog. I'll look now

What sort of money do you budget for during such a trip ??

We budget for a €1000 a month and never spend it although it would be easy to. Our first year we did many sites and travelled many miles so spent a lot, now we stay static for a while and it works out cheaper, although cost is not really a factor for us, if we need to move on we up sticks and go, regardless of the cost issues

Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!

We went in January and went along the coast from marbella along into Portugal. Could not believe how empty the sites were.

We are going back to Portugal this year as we really liked it but this time we are hopefully prepared.

I just wish that when you ask people what it's like in Spain over the winter people would just mention that it can be cold at night and that it can freeze.

I was under perared and had to buy warm jumpers. When talking to people on sites who have been many times they said yes it gets cold and very windy at times.

Sennen

It does get cold, wet and windy in the west especially in Jan and Feb, it’s on the Atlantic. Hence the reason for the empty sites, less around Tarifa as it’s full of kite surfers, you should try the south east, (almeria, Murcia, Costa Blanca) or even further up the east coast, the med side is definitely warmer. Sites are full a lot of the time after Christmas for that reason, the weather is good. Last year we saw 7 days of rain and wore jumpers and trousers during the day twice in six months, nights are chillier of course. Give it a try

Boroboy, years ago I looked at the climate stats for that part of Spain - it said average daytime maximum temperature in January was about 16C. Yes maximum.

I wanted real sunshine so put the caravan away and booked a return flight to Thailand for £400 - bought a a copy of Lonely Planet and took their advice on affordable places to stay. The next year it was Sri Lanka, then Kerala, and after that Bali, and so on for the next 15 years. If the kids could do it I could do it. Neither they nor I were ever tempted to OAP refugee winter camps in Spain.

Go see the world while you can. Good wishes to you.

Your OAP refugee winter camps made me laugh, and you are correct in some cases and places! Having spent near on 4 decades in the military moving every 2-4 years and to some really nice places and outposts I may add, it’s kind of pleasant to be sat in the sun in Spain, not on a refugee camp though :)

Kenny, Is it the adventure of towing and moving from place to place that you like because for £1000 a month you could easily afford the winter months in sunnier climates in say rented accomodation or even hotels ??

We don’t spend anything like €1000 a month, let alone £1000. We are static for a couple of months at least, so let’s say €350 on site fees and €300 on food and drink per monthI get your point but I don’t think you could get hotels or rented accommodation for as cheap as you think, someone I know just did 12 nights all inclusive in a hotel next to Marbella, £750, that didn’t include getting there and back, and they were tied to the hotel timings. Caravanning is the way forward for us anyway and has been fo4 a few years

Thanks jim oldham for the link to jondogoes caravanning - the best blog I've ever read, (much better than ours! ) and I've read quite a few. It brought back memories of lots of places we've visited.

It shows that there's so much more to winter (or any other season) in Spain than just sitting in the sun.

A real pleasure to meet up with him a few years ago.

Do those of you who travel to Spain in the winter book their campsites in advance as I've been told a lot of sites that are open have very few vacancies for anybody turning up without a booking.

A lot of sites get quite full after new year and those pitches that are available are not normally the better ones, and indeed some sites do get maxed out with no pitches available.
