just be careful of roadworks, we left from near you, near ross on wye to portsmouth last july, took us on a big detour to get on the m4 further back down m4 towards wales then when we wanted to get off at newbury junction was closed so had to get off at slough i think, and we didnt have a clue !!

We're based in Newport and always do the tunnel, ragerdless if where we go afterwards, with the dog we find it cheap (with tesco tokens) and convenient and stress free. However after seeing what they've done to the m20 in prep for the farce that is brexit, this year we're going Plymouth - Roscoff and home St Malo - Portsmouth with the dog in on board kennels both ways and staying well away from the hell that will be dover.

Personally I'm looking to stop for the night at around 250 miles of towing.

Regards discount, we booked our ferries through the caravan club and it was a smidge over half the price of booking direct with BF

You’ll be delighted to know that the Operation Brock barriers on the M20 were removed, at a cost of £30m, prior to the Jan 31st deadline. In other news, they have now got a new machine that can shift concrete blocks to reassign lanes at relatively short notice. That’s just for ordinary congestion, ’fog in the Channel continent cut off’ sort of stuff apparently. Though of course, anything is still possible ....

if youre going to go over regularly, it might be worth leaving your van over there? lots of farms offer storage in their barns etc as do a lot of rural campsites. i think ours charges at 150 euros per year on the Vendee and they will take it out of storage and put it on a pitch ready for your arrival and then put it away again when youre all packed up and on your way home.

it doesnt work for everyone, especially with a 'new' van where you want to utilise it as much as possible. but for an older van that is basically just a bedroom and you live outside in the French sun

You do not go through Ouistreham on your exit from Cherbourg. In fact you do not have to go through any built-up part of Cherbourg on your way south. You go straight onto a by-pass after leaving the port area.

Bofs didn't say you go through Ouistreham when leaving Cherbourg,he stated that on leaving Cherbourg you go straight onto a dual carriageway, he was pointing out that if you go Portsmouth Caen then you have to go through Ouistreham.

When the kids were quite young, (they're now In there 40s) we did Normandy and Brittany using the Harwich to Hook of Holland. Travelling from North Wales we called on my Cousin in Huntingdon Cambs.we overstayed our visit and missed our ferry by an hr or two frustratingly we could see our ferry in the port. Ended up staying at a portside pub with limited funds and three young kids it was quite stressful. In the morning we caught another ferry and embarked on a great caravaning holiday. One visit was that of the Bayeux
tapestry which I found absolutely fascinating but the rest of the family soon tired of and left me to it. On our return trip we had an embarrassing hook up on the ramp while leaving the ferry. The towbar plate had caught up on the ramp forcing the rear of the car to be raised up high with the caravan as well. Britany ferries were marvelous and extracted us with a fork lift truck to the amazement of hundreds of ferry passengers cheering us on. The exhaust was ripped off and the rear bumper was hanging off. Brittany ferries helped us get emergency repairs and covered the cost of final repairs to my company car in the UK. Made for a memorable trip, it was only when I got back home I realised I'd fitted the tow bar plate myself, and used the wrong lower holes when threading the bolts. We took this calamity in our stride at the time, I suppose we were young and didn't let it spoil our holiday and the kids thought it was hilarious and recorded on their cameras.

Just to give an update on my original query, we ended up booking Plymouth-Roscoff!

Cost a bit more than the Economie but a nicer boat with better cabin and the drive to Plymouth is easier than Portsmouth. Will have a slightly further drive the other side, but will still be on pitch by early afternoon.

Good call. The roscoff port is quieter than the others as is Plymouth. Getting out of Plymouth port to the A38 can be fun with a caravan but it’s probably just my navigational skills. The roads from roscoff are good and have always been quiet when we have been through. We used to cross on an afternoon crossing and stop the first night in carantec. Carantec it’s self is a nice place for a holiday and roscoff town is very pretty to walk round.
