We always take food for the first few days whilst we are travelling to our main destination, and anything left at home which would go off whilst we are away. We always have the understanding that it could be confiscated.
Last summer, coming home from Europe, we had an early train back but already there were huge queues at Le Shuttle. The officer in the border control booth looked very stressed, said her day was already going badly, and said someting about Albanians. When we finally got through the checks and control booths, we were asked to go to one side. For the first time ever, they asked to look inside our caravan. After my husband got out to let them in, I turned to the kids to prepare them our breakfast pastries to have on the train would be taken as they were there, in plain sight as soon as the border control chap would have stepped into the 'van. He must have seen them, but that's clearly not what they were looking for, as we went on our way with all food still on board.
We'll continue to do what we do.

Coming back from Europe is not an issue, it's going there that potentially is although it doesn't seem to be very high on the list of priorities.
