Volterra is a great base to explore the environs of Siena, San Gimignano. We drove up to Pontedera and caught the train to visit Florence.

Campingo.com is brilliant. You can search by country then filter through to find one that suits.
Campingo seems to list many more sites than UK websites.
One thing to be aware of is classifications.
E.g. 3 star etc refers to the number of amenities...some are not quite inline with UK standards. 3 star sites can be amazing.
The sites to be cautious with are Municipal sites, many are near 'stads', housing estates...whereas other private sites are often in beautiful rural locations.
From 20+ yes experience French sites tend to be more up to date.
Really check finite details like the toilet blocks,
Pitch sizes and parking.
