Your points are exactly right, Netherton; there has to be some reason to visit an area. Whilst I am happy for a short time to sit in the shade of our open awning, eating rillettes and pain just watching the world go by, I do like to “see” some of the area I’m in. And sometimes the area is more important than the site (more so now that the kids are bigger).
And Longcol, I really love the Dordogne. I love the weather, the ambience, the ancient caves (one of my sons is a geologist) and hiring a canoe and paddling down river. We’ve stayed in a few places, but my favourite site is in Monceaux close to Argentat. It is a little less touristy than further West but the river is really accessible (and useable) at various campsites in that part. Our favourite site really quietens down in the last two weeks of August so we have been there during that fortnight five times in the last ten years (topped and tailed with stops en route and back again).
It’s 20 years since we did Brittany so we might do that this year. Perhaps close to a beach. We’ve been to Le Pouldu before and may take a closer look at what that is like now-a-days.
Still cannot decide.
My ears pricked up when you said Brittany! It is easier for us to go to Brittany than many places in the UK, living on Dartmoor we are only 45 mins from the Ferry at Plymouth. If you want a site near a beach, quiet and friendly then Camping Pors Peron is worth a look, on the stunning Cap Sizun. Great walks and cycles, but not exactly great for nightclubs! 😂
When the forecast is set fair, Brittany takes some beating. 👍. We always wait until a few days before, then book a ferry. Good luck with your search.

OK, I give in.
Brittany is great when the weather is fine, there's plenty of choice and for motorhomers, plenty of aires too.
These are the French sites we return to but we're still looking for our favourite site.
Camping du Polquer in Bénodet (Finistere), is a nice site. It's the opposite end of the promenade around the bay to the small town. Whenever I think of a Breton seaside town, it's Bénodet that comes to mind. The site has a pool and I think a bar in high season (never been there in high season to find out). The town has restaurants and bars and there's a supermarket on the outskirts. There's a very good market on Monday. If you want a site with more buzzers and bells there are other's to choose from in the area.
Camping Les Druides at Carnac Plage in Morbihan is a nice little site too. It has a pool but no bar or snack area but then Carnac Plage is only a short walk away. The beach is stunning. The market is one of our favourites.
Moving down to the Vendée, Camping La Grand Vallée at La Tranche sur Mer is a great little site. The snack and bar area are excellent value. The only downside is the nearby disco which carries on all night at the weekends (not that it bothered me, I can sleep through pretty much anything).
Further around the coast we like Camping au Port Punay in Châtelaillon Plage south of La Rochelle, great site, has a pool, bar and a shop. The people are great and very helpful. There's a beach nearby and you can catch a bus into La Rochelle.
If you want something inland and fancy a city break, Camping Nantes is probably one of the best municipal sites we've ever encountered. There's a restaurant on site and you get free access to the nearby municipal pool. The tram stop is just outside of the site and you can make your way into the city and les Machines de l’Île - go and ride on a giant mechanical elephant.
We have good memories associated with these sites which is why we keep going back.
