Our Ford one decided we were approx 3km off the Asturias coast in the sea rather than driving around Villaviciosa

Just stumbled on this thread after a couple of weeks touring France. (camp site reviews left)

I used to always use ViaMichelin for planning a route and working out tolls (caravan option) but have now given up on it.

Is there an alternative where I can put in a route (eg Dieppe --> Bezier) and it will tell me my toll price for different route options.

Thank you

My VW satnav has only recently been in to get a new antenna fitted.
It currently thinks we are in Welsh Wales when in fact we are actually in the Ardeche outside Vallon.
Go figure!

Our previous Škoda was the same: when I drilled down its system, it wasn’t picking up all the satellites to interpolate our location. We were apparently in the North Sea. Oddly, it moved when we did, but never in the right direction.
Too expensive to replace the antenna on our old vehicle.

ViaMichelin still gives a selection of routes and gives a toll price for a solo car . Add 50% to that price for car plus caravan and it won’t be far out.

Do people not use maps anymore?
Seems so easy to spread a map on the table and just jot down the major towns to aim for. Use a larger scale nearer your destination

I use maps & Apple map on my phone. Never used a sat nav in my life. Made me smile once when we arrived at a hotel in Holland. Was asked if I found it ok. I had looked on my phone map & located it no probs. Was told that hotel was wrongly indicated on sat navs & most people got lost trying to find it.

The ap on any phone is a version of a satnav as it needs satellite data to get you to your destination. In essence your phone is the Satnav so not sure how you can state that you have never sued a satnav in your life?

Because Ian I just use the map. I don’t use the actual sat nav bit that talks to you. Tbf I was a truck driver all my working life so I do tend to have a map of UK & some of mainland Europe in my head.

No matter as the data for the map still comes from a satellite so it is still a satnav app.

Surely a Sat Nav is for navigating from point A to B ...
A downloaded map can't be called a satnav, can it?

However when you open the map app it shows your location. You then find a destination and input that and it shows you where to go.

Oh no it doesn't! The GPS or alternative satellite systems give nothing other than a time signal and a geolocation code. That info is superimposed on a map from OTHER sources. The GPS data alone is as good as useless, it needs adding to a map to be useable.

Now maps (from multiple different sources) can be live downloads via a mobile phone data link (which is what stuffs many people when the signal fails, they lose their navigation aid!), or downloaded and stored locally on a phone/sat nav.

You can use the maps without a GPS signal (no different to a paper map in those circumstances), but NOT vice versa!
