> avoid Paris and the dreaded peripherique <
If you cannot avoid Paris you can always take 'La Francilienne', the second, wider ring which is not that crowded as the peripherique.

Meandering up or down is fine, but in planning take care that you will no be on one of the main roads around Paris on the day/afternoon just before 14 July.
The 14th July this year is on a friday, so loads of people will exit Paris or other large cities like Lyon or Orléans, but mainly Paris, to enjoy a long weekend elsewhere.

You will also find that most cities and town will organise magnificent fireworks on 14 July. Pick a nice place to watch in time.

First couple of weeks in July are good down in the south of France - the sea is warm and lovely!  The same in September - the crowds have gone then!  Lots of sites near St Aygulf - lovely little seaside town - and fantastic safe beaches just about a mile up the road towards Frejus.  The tunnel does return off-peak for £99 - it's fantastic!  Through in half an hour and on our way.  Can either do motorways to the south via Rheims, Dijon, Lyon, Nice (guaranteed lovely weather) or - to avoid some tolls - the free motorway to Rouen and down to Evreux, Chartres, Orleons, then across to St Etienne, (good road) A83 and down motorway again to St Raphael/Frejus and St Aygulf - road out to Roquebrune sur Argens has lots of sites - Les Etoiles is reputed to be a good one!  Has a website.  We can do it from Calais with one stop over - B&B at Moulins last time for £23 for room!  But I guess weather would still be nice around the Loire Valley and La Rochelle at that time, or a little further south towards Bordeaux.... lots of lovely camp sites...

Definitely stay clear of Paris!!!

We were in the south of France - and sunbathing - up to the 5th November this year!  Not always this good, but September is known to be lovely.

Did you say??? Did I miss it??? Are you towing???

Speed ferries if not towing.

Dover Calais if towing - Sea France slightly cheaper.

Cannot recommend the Vendee too highly but we stay inland from the main sites - they get a bit hectic and my need to kill noisy teenagers rears its ugly head if things get too busy!

try this link, http://www.eurocampings.co.uk/main.html?aff=1717&tid=2

Charente Maritime is quieter than Vendee, and La Rochelle worth a visit

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=5166  is a site run by British couple - worth checking out.  Also Campingdevezeau.com - another British couple in central France.  Twin Lakes is further south - Poitou Charente, near Montendre - quiet site with fishing lakes but plenty of space (17 acres I think!) for putting up a tent.

Making a note of all the places mentioned too Caroline!  It is so good to have recommendations from people who have travelled the route before!

Can **anyone** use them? Or do I have to morph into Kelly Holmes?
