I know I'm being thick but what on earth is reverse polarity?

I am going to france for the 2nd time in August, and I have a standard hook up lead (from Argos!) can anyone tell me what I need to know please?

Right - I think I understand what's required. I have a standard EHU (which has an in-built reverse polarity tester) and a Continental adaptor. I am going to need a blue male to blue female cable with reversed polarity. I can buy the socket and plug (Ģ1.85 each from Towsure) and a metre of cable to link them up. Can anyone tell me the specification for the cable that I need?

I'm a bit nervous of making something to do with electricity, can you buy something like this in a camping shop?

hi sweet running - a big topic with a complicated answer, sorry but I suggest you search on the topic you will uncover loadsa stuff. best source for good info includes Derek who posts on mmm site,or  http://www.co.uk/vehicles/electrics.htm or http://www.soh.me.uk/ or search  out here.

Lorna, as I understand it the shops don't sell reversed plugs because of the health & safety issue. The plugs shouldn't be used in the UK and you can't buy them abroad because they are redundant for their users. It's really no more complicated than wiring a plug, you just follow different instructions for 2 of the wires. Even I can do it, and I think electricity is some kind of weird black magic.

Am I being dim?  If you buy a standard UK 3 Pin Socket Tester, where do you plug it in to test the polarity? surely you can't plug it stright into the bollard, and you dont want to connet the van so you can use one of its sockets?  Gee I must be thick?

name withheld to protect the neurally challenged .... oh dam its in my profile on the left!!

My understanding of the reversed polarity is that it is only an issue if the appliance you are wanting to use has a motor - ie a hair dryer - and that the motor would therefore run backwards? Am I correct in thinking that items such as fridges, kettles and lighting therefore, would be fine used on a reversed polarity system?

Well, I thought I would need to buy:

1. Caravan mains plug (C55)
2. Caravan mains socket (C56)

Then it would just be a case of cabling the two ends up but swapping over one of the wires. I'm not sure what spec of cable to buy.

I suppose I could buy a UK mains converter lead (UK) (C58) and then add the mains plug to that (C55) - at least then I'd know that I had the correct cabling.

Do any of the experts know if this is feasible?
