St-Malo is much nearer to the Vendee than any of the other French ports. Only about 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on where in the Vendee you head for.

I would say driving times to the Vendee with just a car are roughly:
Calais - 8 hours
Dieppe & Le Havre - 6 hours (haven't done these routes for a bit)
Cherbourg - 5 hours
Caen (Ouistreham) - 4 hours
Roscoff - 5 hours
St Malo - 3 hours

France is extremely camping/caravanning friendly. As has been said above, the roads and motorways make driving a pleasure compared to the UK. Just go for it!
