Mmm similar story for the Loire, seems to be improving - here's hoping!

We have decided on a plan B for our trip to France in August. If the weather is still poor on the Atlantic coast where we have booked and paid a 120 euro deposit on a pitch then we are going to cut our losses and find a site down near the Med. We wont decide until a day or two before our departure but we would prefer good weather over cost.

Wish we could do that - we only have 2 weeks to play around with this year though, so the Med will have to wait until our 3-week hols next summer. Weather is great down there at the moment, a friend of mine rang from just outside Perpignan and it was 28c

It's been sunny but windy all day here. Sun's still shining and it's currently 24 degrees.

I'm sure the weather will be great for you Caddy Clan. Our plans are only a last resort as we only have 14 nights too but we dont have children and long spells in the car to worry about like you. Hopefully the weather will be fine at Les Mathes and we can stick to our original plans as we too are planning 3 weeks in the Ardeche next year. Keeping everything crossed for a big yellow sun over the Loire for you.

I looked at the French Met Office site this morning and the prospect was bleak (though I have another couple of weeks before I go). At lunchtime I sent the link to my boss who is going later in the summer and by the time he looked at it it looked much better .. I mean the next few days looked better than they had .. not just today brightening up as the day went on.

Magicaly where abouts are you going in the Ardeche next year?

I can't decide where to go next year - for sure I want to be guaranteed warm weather so it's either the South-West coast or the Med for us. Trouble is, we want a nice site with pool/slides for the kids without too much in the way of manufactured entertainment (which I hate!) such as karaoke etc  - not my cuppa tea at all.

I liked the look of Esterel Caravanning right on the Cote D'Azur but the drive is really making me wonder. Perhaps we should do take a few days or so to drive down (have one stopover of a couple of nights at least) and then 14 nights on the coast. Will prob get the motorail back.

What do you think?

Hi Caddy Clan

We will be going after August 15th and into the first week of September so the sites should not be as busy as they get earlier in the season and the entertainment, if any will be toned down. I have not really decided about sites but it will be the Ardeche or perhaps the Drome region of Provence, probably one of the sites that accept Camping Cheques as quite a lot accept them after the 18th so it keeps the cost of the holiday down. We are doing a beach side holiday this year so we will be ready for countryside and stunning scenery next year so we will probably avoid the Med coast. I'm not a lover of site entertainment either so it will be nice to find a site that lets you sit on the bar terrace in the evening disturbed by nothing more than background music.

We will definately do the drive over 2 or 3 nights in France both ways which is why we would rather save the trip for next year and do it over 3 weeks. We have driven from the Lot to Calais in one go, nearly 600 miles, sharing the driving, and found it ok but it will be nice to do a long drive at a more leisurely pace. We dont have children to take into consideration but I guess they must be your priority when planning a trip like that. Taking a few days over it and getting the motor rail back sounds like an excellent idea

The Esterel site looks lovely on the website and I like the idea of the bathrooms on the pitch. We are trying them for the first time this year at L'Oree du Bois. The restaurant and facilities all look brilliant and its in a nice area of the med . Esterel was one I considered when we first decided to head south east but I think we will want to be inland next year.

Over the last several years we have done the Lot, Dordogne, Vendee, Loire and Brittany. This year its the Charente Maritime so it is definately the Med for us next year. It is many years since we were last in that area but in those days we flew, hired a car and rented a Gite. Good job OH is a Driving Instructor and nuts about driving with all those miles to cover.
