An alternative to a French sim would be a world sim. We both have a Sim4travel sim (www.sim4travel.com) that we use abroad - it has a UK number so people calling from the UK pay the normal UK mobile rate, and you don't pay roaming charges so it's free to receive calls. Making calls within Europe costs 25p a minute. We both set our usual mobiles to divert to voicemail before leaving the UK, leaving the sims at home so that they're in the UK and thus not roaming), then leave a message on the voicemail saying we can be contacted on the following number - i.e. our world sims. NB don't divert your calls to your world sim unless you want to pay the cost of the call!
We've been using these sims for just over a year and have used them all over Europe and in South Africa and Kuwait without a problem. You do need an unlocked phone, but nokias can be unlocked really easily with codes obtained over the web and I've heard (but not tried!) that phones can be unlocked in shops for a fee.
