Question to you: which Garmin have you got?
I have a Nuvi 255. Bought from PC World more than a year ago - I'm sure they don't do that one any more 'cos mine was reduced to £70 - it was a no-brainer to buy it at that price. It's pretty bog standard but has whole of Europe so it does us fine. They all come with one free download of maps (within 6 months I think) if the installed one is out of date, or there is an option for free updates for the life of the unit when you pay the one off upfront charge. I guess you get used to how one make operates so I stuck with Garmin but I would have gone for a Tom Tom just as quickly if the price was right. Never had one with live traffic info but it would be very nice if you think it merits the initial outlay. The market for GPS devices seems to be falling away a bit because of the navigation Apps on Smartphones and i-phones, but they are expensive to operate abroad unless you use airplane mode and wireless connections. I am sticking with my simple cell phone and my Garmin! Hot Deals often have bargains posted or you can do a search on there for sat nav gps and narrow the search to last 30 days. Just looked and it seems to have been less popular ones there meantime. Good website for any bargains anyway http://www.hotukdeals.com/all/deals/hot
Yes, we've been to France in May/June, but went to the Mosel Valley first for a change. Found it very good for cycling there, lots of marked cycle paths. Then after that back to France, Burgundy, Provence, Loire.
Sounds great
Also off again soon, probably try out Normandy, weather dependent, and further down the coast near Les Sables d'Olonne, perhaps the Venise Verte, possibly Royan area, then the coast near Arcachon and Dune de Pyla, for OH to fly his model aircraft. Boys and their toys.....
Will look out for that smart looking campervan of yours
Have a good holiday and hope the weather is good to you, then it may be good to us as well
Same to you, Fingers Crossed

Thanks oxter, for your 2 replies and details of your Garmin. That was a good bargain!
We've not really got much time now before we go away to have a serious look for a satnav, it's something for when we get back, and Garmin is possibly a good alternative to TT. As you say, it depends on price too.
Also appreciate the link for hotUKdeals, any info like that comes in useful.
So, have a fantastic holiday and enjoy your cycling, wherever that may be.

We're back and the satnav performed almost as we expected especially the lane assist part through Paris, it was invaluable.
She did throw a wobbly coming through the new Hindhead tunnel and when we refused to go to the Eurotunnel and headed into Dover, every roundabout she tried turning us around and even when we got onto the ship over the water she went nuts because there was no roads.
My only criticism was that it always took you back on a different route than you came in on. We came all the way through the centre of La Souterraine through the town centre and market square but on the way home we headed out to the A20 on faster roads. Our friends lived near the main road to La Souterraine although the satnav took us on a 3 mile detour round country lanes to get back out on the same road we would have gone on to get to LS, how can that be the quickest route? Slightly frustrating!!
That was my only criticism, the return route always seemed faster than the route to get there. I bought the Garmin 1340 and its worth the money, got a slight glitch, when I uploaded the Euro maps I added a couple of Star Wars vehicles, when you scroll through the selection to select one, it goes so far and cuts off the satnav and reboots itself. I'll hook it up to the PC and if it still does it, its going back to Best Buy.
Thank You
Alex
