We're from 'up North' as well, but still use the trip South to visit unfortunate relatives/friends who some cruel twist of fate has placed living in the South,

Aways seem to get the best deals with Eurotunnel by trawling their web site and going when no one else wants to.. Leaving this year in August for £88.00 and only booked a few days ago.

Nick,

I haven't booked mine for August yet  but the price you got is very good. Is this with eurotunnel? We've never done that route might try it this year.

Thanks Sue

Is that return or one way and is that solo or with a caravan?

Hadn't realised this thread was still running!  We went Dover/Calais last year - OH wanted to see St Nazaire and a couple of other places.  We enjoyed the sightseeing and the drive wasn't soooo bad, it was the setting up/packing down in the wet weather, which was an absolute pain.  So much so that this year we bought a caravan and we're crossing Portsmouth/Le Havre....  But NEXT year... we are saving all our Tesco points and cashing them in against the Hull/ Zeebrugge crossing - I quite fance a 'free' crossing.

We used out Tesco points to book a P&O crossing to Calais in October this year (going to a caravan near Disney courtesy of the £9 Sun holiday tokens) so far 3 night weekend break to disney has cost £51 for 4 of us!   Just need to find somewhere to buy cheap Disney tickets...

Yeah Speedferries are pretty good. dont knock em for the trailer thing - if you saw their vessels you'll be glad they kept you off with a trailer. Access isnt easy even for a car alone, and for the journey itself it's like sitting on an NCP entry ramp when you cross on their catamaran service. They have two now iirc, both ex-navy from New Zealand.

Norfolk line are up and coming, and will give you an excellent deal.

Just out of interest. Could someone give me some idea of how much Hull-zeebrugge costs? And how do you use your Tesco points to pay for it?

This would be better for us too, as it would cut out a massive bit of driving for us - something to be thankful for when you've got 2 very active kids who tend to start on the 'are we there yet's' on an hour's journey to the grandparents!

We've not done 'abroad' before so I'm floundering a bit atm.

The cost of the crossing varies dependent on what time of year you book. The rule of thimb is - the earlier, the cheaper.  The Tesco points work out at 4 times face value against the cost of crossing - thus if your crossing was for isntance £400 you would need £100 of Tesco points or as many as poss and make up[ the shortfall in cash.  I think I saw the Hull crossing at approx £450 early in the year.  You contact Tesco dorect they thenissue you with vouchers to the relevant value and you then send them on to P & O with your booking - I think.

Best to check on www.poferries.com.   There are some crossings where trailers are free - Sundays are among those I think.   We went in March and the actual car cost was only about £75 each way.   You then decide what sort of cabin you want - the Club Class are great - proper double beds, not bunks, a FREE mini-bar and satellite TV in your cabin!   I think our return Hull-Zeebrugge with car was about £450 - we paid in Tesco Clubcard vouchers which was £112.50 worth!

The food on board is great.   We have 2 very lively young children too, and I think the overnight is a good option - they can burn off the energy in the day, have a good meal when you get on the boat, all sleep, then you're up at 6:30/7 for breakfast (which is equivalent to an hour earlier in UK time) and off on the motorway just after 8am.

The boats are really nice, and loading/unloading is so stress free and easy going compared to Dover.   Definitely my choice.
