Both sides of this argument are correct - and fortunately we are all able to choose between minimal breakdown cover - and Red Pennant, and everything in between.  The value of any policy is only shown when you actually need it - and the value of it to you is if it meets your needs in the event of a problem.

However, there are undoubtedly some of us who don't require all the bells and whistles which Red Pennant provides.  Our caravan insurance covers repatriation in case of breakdown or damage, our car insurance the same in the case of an accident, we have annual personal holiday insurance, and so we really only require minimal breakdown cover for if the car breaks down with the caravan attached during approximately ten weeks of holiday in various parts of Europe.  I doubt we would want to continue our holiday in the circumstances outlined by Neil and Lena - I'd rather come home and start again when everything was sorted out - leaving the caravan on site somewhere, or back in our storage in France.

For us ADAC provides this for us, along with annual breakdown cover in Great Britain for a one off payment of about £90.00.

It's all about what you need, and whether you're willing to go with minimum cover  or whether you want each and every risk covered with just one policy which provides bells, whistles, safety belts, and braces (or those using it assure us it does!)

If my car was to suffer a major engine failure on my way to the ferry on 3 month trip to Spain Red Pennant would provide me with a replacement tow car for the duration .
Would ADAC do the same for the entire duration ?

If my caravan was rear end shunted and written of
Red Pennant would provide alternative accomodation for
the entire 3 months if needed .
Would ADAC also pay for a hotel for 3 months ?.
If you want every eventuality covered RP does what says.

ADAC is fine if you only want a break down service .

For health and break down cover insurance for a 66 day trip equates to £3 a day for 2 adults , a small amount for the level of cover it provides

For a laugh, I asked for a quote from RP for a 3 month trip to Europe, for me, wife and caravan.

Standard quote was only £265 - not bad BUT it limits you to £2k for 'continued holiday accomodation' - not sure that's enough (£30 per day) to keep you going for 3 months, is it? Maybe in some cruddy hotel...

The PLUS policy was £470 and the limit increased to £4k but that's only £60 a day for 3 months. You're not going to get the same standard accommodation as your van would provide.

The limits for 'continuation of holiday travel' (I assume that means a replacement tow-car?) are the same - can you hire a towcar for £60 a day? Dubious...

Basically, if one of those disasters befell you, you're pretty likely to come home - would you really want to continue your holiday in a hire car or staying in some pokey hotel, never mind the stress, possible injury, and all the insurance you've got to sort out waiting at home?

So you cant hire a a towcar for £420 a week (£60 per day)
What sort of car would you be expecting ? A Range Rover

As for alternative accomodation , we met a couple on a C&CC rally last winter who had to have there motorhome repatriated and RP paid for 10 week stay on the same site in a lovely brand new static caravan and they still had there small car to use .
When it came time for them to return home RP took care of everything including re arranging there ferry travel

Not a Range Rover but you can't have a Golf either if you want to tow your van. I was basing it on the cost of my car hire in Spain - £25 a day for a Toyota Aygo, so I assumed something to tow a caravan would be much higher.

Bit tricky to get an online quote for a towcar - best I could find was about £2.5k for a Toyota Rav4 for 67 days but that only covers the UK. You're getting close to your £4k limit but fair enough, looks do-able.

10 weeks in a static on the same site when you should have been touring in a motorhome? I'd rather come home and get the motorhome fixed and go another time...

ADAC covers more than just breakdown I fact some cover is more tha Red Pennant covers. You can also get Health Cover from them too.

For your information the couple concerned were booked on the rally for duration as many motorhomers often stay put when overwintering in Spain.
And as for car hire I'm talking about UK car hire and £420 per week would easily pay for a suitable tow car I.e Vx Insignia , Mondeo etc.
If your happy to have basic cheap as you can get break down cover all well and good and I fully understand some folks need to watch the penny's
however I want all eventualities covered and deem RP to be the best immaterial of the cost

When I booked our Tunnel ticket through the Caravan Club this year they automatically sent an Insurance Quote for RP Single trip was £227.00 Annual was £406. Motoring and Personal.
I would not pay that amount when I can get ADAC Partner Plus for €109 per Year which includes some excellent Personal Cover inc. Air Ambulance in case of illness or accident ,Theft or Loss of property, Money, Medication and much more. Together with my Bank Personal Free Cover and the EHIC Card we have excellent cover. We have used Breakdown twice and Hospitalisation once and could not fault the services. All excellent.

Sorry to anyone who's getting bored by this thread now (it's my fault, I'm an argumentative so-and-so), but your original post talked about breaking down on your way to a 3-month trip to Spain, so you would need European cover then.

And don't forget, you can't just have any old car, it needs a towbar and there are very few companies who offer that in the UK alone, never mind taking it to Europe.

Bottom line: if you breakdown/have an accident at the start of a 3-month trip, wouldn't you just go home, get stuff fixed and go later (obviously, work and/or kids are not an issue if you can take 3 months off)?

After all this waffle, I'll come clean and admit that if I was going away for 3 months, I'd probably pay that £470 for an RP policy as well as that's a reasonable cost compared to the holiday overall. But £220 for 2 weeks? No...

OK, I promise to stop now...

Crikey googled adac /english and got the page .

Prices are 109e for 2 on their plus and 69e on basic.

BUT whats the differance. I also read that you cant fill out the forms you have to call their 0800 number.

I'm looking for basic cover for the 2 of us, car and caravan for 6 months europe. Is adac the way to go.??
