I would only add that it's even more hassle if you lose a passport in remote places overseas. We saw a man do this in southern Thailand - he couldn't fly to Bangkok to get a replacement as he had no other ID to be allowed on the plane, and when he got there he had to wait till his son broke into his house to get some ID and fax it to the consulate. Passports are precious.

Gulp ....Applying for my Passport to be renewed......completed on the internet, declaration printed ans signed, up to date photos and old passport placed in envelope. OH also sending his off with a name change. Sending Recorded tomorrow......hope it's less stressful than last time!!!! Off to do mini-tour of Europe 27th June so they have plenty of time ......
As pointed out a few yrs ago. Best to use Post Office check & send. Worked for me recently. I was told at PO that photos were no good as I had light reflected in my glasses. That's a new one. Apparently even if you wear glasses all the time passport photo has to be without glasses.
Back to photo booth for another £5 spent then back to PO & new passport arrived after a week.
That's excellent news saxo. So now posters have a choice between possibly wasting £5 by leaving their glasses on & definitely not wasting £5 by taking them off...
To avoid any ambiguity it would have been better to post that it is advisable not to wear glasses for a passport photo rather than state they must not!

Yes, but how long ago did you renew yours.

As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.

The government departments are now digital by default - when you complete on-line everything you need to know is clearly visible when you print it off - including diagrams of what is acceptable for a passport photo. The page you send is basically your signature with a barcode as you have completed it all on-line.
Last time we had completed everything correctly - the passport office lost our documents and then found them again once we had completed another lost document form. Completely their fault. The advice we have taken is to send it off "Recorded delivery" NOT "signed for". So fingers crossed.
Living abroad, I had to do everything online and then courier the passport to the UK. You used to be able to do it all in the embassy. It cost me €150 plus the courier costs and it turned out it was processed in Belfast. I could have saved some money driving up there but HMG required me to send it to Liverpool.

You can take your own photo and use online upload. Its really easy and i did mine via a selfie even though it says not to. Passport came within about 3 days after had sorted photo (had already done rest and paid online)
No reflection from glasses is nothing new, I have had to have my last two passports without glasses as mine do reflect badly. As above the instructions you get now are actually pretty clear I think
New Passport arrived yesterday, old one returned today. OH has changed his name officially and despite having to send more documents etc his new passport arrived also arrived yesterday. European road trip here we come :-)
Use the post office, guaranteed if there are any mistakes have a friend whose name was spelt incorrectly, all checked, passport office error it was sorted in hours not days, we always apply for ours we'll in advance as well

And just to muddy the water even more, when I came back through the automatic passport machines last month, I left my glasses on even though I don't have them on in the passport photo, and it let me in!
For those travelling with small children, it might be advisable to make sure that you carry documents proving the child is yours! My daughter was stopped at Luton airport recently and asked for such proof regarding her 4 month old daughter. Luckily, and purely by chance, she was carrying the baby's birth certificate and her own marriage certificate, as she has not yet changed her passport since her marriage 18 months ago.
