Sounds like ADAC off load quite a lot of the legwork to the AA anyway. Makes you wonder where either of them are making any money.
ADAC are based in Germany, therefore if you have a breakdown outside of Germany then it is obvious they will use a Company based in the country you are in. This is exactly the same as the AA/RAC etc do if you breakdown in Europe.
To be fair, whilst ADAC are happy to take your money even though you don't live in Germany, their service is not really intended for non German residents. Hence which is why in my opinion this problem arose. They may be ok to change a wheel at the roadside etc. but I personally wouldn't rely on them for recovery back to the UK.
In which case, who would you use if you were spending a lot of time in France (for example)? A UK based company because that's where we live, a French company because that's where you've broken down, or a company in another country because they offered the best perceive value for money?
In theory at least, as long as it's within the EU it really shouldn't make any difference

saftlad, I understand what you are saying. However in my opinion for a UK resident I would only recommend a UK based insurer, likewise for a German resident a German based company etc.etc.
I personally only pay £54 a year for full UK/Euro breakdown cover as it is an add on to my vehicle insurance (CIS).
It really doesn't matter in which country you Breakdown Organization resides you will always get a partner of theirs attend you in another country should you breakdown. I have seen many excellent reports of ADAC on this Forum and other caravan forums. They do cover a vast amount of circumstances that other companies do not. One of the main points is the length of caravan, some organizations only cover up to 7.5 metres in length and not when caravan is not attached to car. ADAC do and up to 10 metres in length.
Is it just me or did anyone else not consider the OP's problem a 'total nightmare'?
The ADAC, AA and everyone else seemed to bend over backwards to try sort things out. One breakdown in communication, one extra overnight stay and that's your definition of a 'nightmare'?!
A friend of ours in France: car breaks down 3 days in, with kids, tent, bikes and kayak on roof, no suitable hire car could be found (in the whole of Northern France!), so they had to fly home a week early (they were supposed to be having a 2-site holiday and obviously couldn't get to the second site) - repaired car was only returned as far as Calais, so mate had to go there to get it (at least they paid). Can't remember who the breakdown company was but not ADAC...
Now THAT'S a nightmare.

I read somewhere they have around 17 million members which I assume must mean they are doing something right ?
I do agree with the last 2 posts as it really doesn't seem to be all down to ADAC, they appeared to try every trick in the book to resolve a very difficult situation and while some things didn't go quiet to plan I'm really not sure under the circumstances any other breakdown company would have faired a lot better
