You'll never run out of places to visit around either site - they're both in lovely areas, with fantastic scenery, and with masses of variety. Let's hope the weather is kind, too!
You have plenty of time to research things that you and the family will enjoy, so I'm sure you'll have a great time.
I don't know if you've looked at ways to get from Vallon to St Leon, but I'd go to Aubenas, and then up the N106 to Brioude, then Clermont Ferrand to Brive. Although it doesn't look as short a distance, it will save time overall. The first section from Aubenas is a long uphill pull, on a winding road, but with plenty of passing places. We've towed both up and down it several times. Stop at the Col at the top for some breathtaking long distanced views. Then from about Langogne, its downhill again on a long (less winding) road. I haven't actually done the Clermont Ferrand to Brive section of the route, but it's a motorway so should be the easiest part of the journey.
