When we bought our caravan it was 5 months old and the people we bought it from claimed it had never been used. They had tried to put up the awning in their garden, had had a major row and had given up on it.
We bought it, drove it to a campsite and set off to put it up. They had colour coded all the awning poles, but unfortunately they had got them wrong, which explained their fight, so it took a bit of time to fix it. An older man saw us clearly having some problems and came over to help. He hooked the awning pole into the rail, dropped it, it swung down and bang - a noticeable ding in the side of our new caravan. I advised very strongly that we weren't ready to put in the poles yet, but he still wanted to. I was getting ready to assert myself by running him off our pitch, physically if I had to, when his wife called him for his tea.
He probably still talks about the couple who wouldn't take his advice. I never looked at that ding without grizzling to myself about him. That's the issue with this - however it ends both parties generally spend the foreseeable future thinking they were right.
