I don't think France is any more safe, or any less safe, than other popular European holiday destinations. Just saying you've never heard of any problems in umpteen years of camping doesn't mean the problems don't exist. I could say that in my 66 years of living in Merseyside, Birmingham, Kidderminster, Leeds, York and other places I've never been mugged/burgled, but that doesn't mean England is a low-crime environment! As others have said, just be sensible. But as there are plenty of cheap campsites for an overnight stop, is it really worth taking a risk just to save a few euros?
