Our last trip to France was for a fortnight in Obernai, Alsace with our folding caravan. There were just the two of us and the dog. We stayed in a hotel in the Champagne on the way there and again on the way back. In all it cost us about £1300.

We 'paid' for the Tunnel with Tesco Clubcard points, Our Travel and health insurance is free with our Nationwide Account, and European Breakdown is courtesy of Ford UK (it came free with our annual Mondeo service). We also took EHIC cards just in case. Total cost - nothing. It all helps folks!

The appointment with the vet in Obernai for the dog worming cost about £30 (included in the overall cost above).

On this trip we avoided motorways tolls and used N roads instead as we had plenty of time. The 'savings' were used to pay for the hotels.

I have not included the cost of the wine we brought back with us!!

Oops! Missed a zero from my original total posted on the 8th.   Revised version above!!

I reckon that on average our France holidays cost us about £100 a day based on 14 nights for the two of us and Fido. We don't go in high season and tend to use municipal sites and our ACSI card.

We've been to both France and Spain in the summer holidays the last two years and we put everything on our "holiday credit card" so know exactly how much it cost in total. Both years have come in at just under £2,000 all in.

We are a family of 4 - two adults and 2 kids in a car with a roofbox and own tent. Considering it would cost us £2,000 just to fly anywhere in Europe in August before we have anywhere to stay or any spending money I think that's a bargain! And we still get the sun, sea, sand and pool! The kids love it! I wouldn't do it for a week, though. If you're paying for your crossing and petrol you may as well drive to the sun and stay for a fortnight!

Hi MonW.
Our spend in total is a little less that yours, being just the two of us, but on a pro-rata basis is probably the same, as we are away for around 20 days.

We always budget for a max spend of £2k but usually fall £300 or so short of that, which goes into the pot for the next years holiday.

But what I always forget to factor in when some one asks how much does your holiday in total cost, is the amount that you would normally spend at home, in fact I am not even sure what the figure what be if you include Gas and Electric, maybe over three weeks at home we go through £500 I really could not say.

But taking that amount of our average total holiday spend of £1700 brings the real cost down to £1200.

So holidays are not always as expensive as we may think they are.
