No real problem with the driving in Italy but when we were there in June driving to/from Croatia via France and Italy we were astounded by how heavily used the A4 motorway between Trieste and Turin was - a not particularly good two lane motorway most of the way with just lines and lines of trucks almost filling the inside lane all the way and very busy around the main cities even when it expanded to 4 lanes.

Other than that no worse than the UK.
