Yes, just go for it. Do your research first, decide where you're going, plan the route, get a decent map as well as your satnav. It might seem a bit daunting, we were a bit wary before our first trip 2 years ago. But once you've done it you'll wonder why you worried! We've just come back from our second trip and will be going again as soon as we get the opportunity. One thing I'd advise, is brush up on your French, even if only the basics. You'll find if you attempt to speak French, the French people will appreciate it and try to speak English, or at least help you to understand. This time round I was a bit more confident than last time and even managed to barter at a couple of vide-greniers (car boot sales).

Hi,
The previous posts have all offered excellent advice
The only things I can add are.. ViaMichelin phone app- after years of using the desktop version I used the ViaMichelin phone app this year both to plan journeys and stop overs and also as a satnav - you can set it to beep if you exceed the speed limit which can be useful when the signs are in KMPH and it's live route planning helped us to avoid some jams on a busy Saturday.
As for the language - over the winter I used DUOLINGO on my phone to refresh my memory and build confidence - just a few minutes a day can really make a difference.
If you are so close to the tunnel and ferries why not do a day trip and visit Hardelot Place or Le Touqet both are less than an hour from Calais and lovely for a spot of lunch and walk along the beach even in winter. Once you've seen how easy it is you will be confident to take your holiday and become a true Francophile.

It's only an expensive hobby when it's parked on your Drive....use it, love it , live it.

Honestly Jason, you'll be genuinely surprised how quickly you get used to driving on French roads - I'm talking within 15 mins of leaving Calais you'll feel completely confident. And motorhomeguy's idea is very good - try and get over for a couple of day trips, even if you go as a foot passenger it would be good for you to see how easy it is to use shops, restaurants etc over there even if you don't speak the lingo
