We've been to Azay le Rideau - camping Sabots I believe. It was a great site as you say. We also did the one at Muides last year - a simple site with a quirky manager. Showers bit dated but otherwise fine.

That campsite in Sarlat was privately owned when we first went there in 2005. The family sold out to Indigo/Huttopia a few years back, it's not as nice now, but we still use it.

Glad to hear that about ACSI.

We don't want bells and whistles either, just a good clean site with a river view and close to a town. We eat dinner out most evenings, it's part of the holiday. It does stack up though, most nights we spend 50-60 euro. Sometimes a campsite has a small restaurant and it's a bit cheaper, but being remote is a no-no for us.

I've been looking at La Citadelle in Loches. That looks a good site and is close to town. This will be an experiment for us as we've never camped in September before.

We stayed at La Citadelle in Loches it is a 10 minute walk into town. About halfway there is a very good Boulangerie. Plenty of nice bars and a couple of restaurants. Also takeaways but the Chinese was sufficiently different as to prevent us going back and the pizza shop on the corner opposite the pmu shop for some reason put minced gristle beef on my pepperoni pizza rendering it inedible. There is the usual town stadium en route to town. On Sundays for home fixtures they had barbecue and frittes which they offered to us as we walked past.
Loches is a lovely place with plenty on interesting architecture and was home to the kings of France until Louis ix. In hindsight we would have stayed longer

If you're going inland I'd be inclined to take extra bedding - in Burgundy and the Loire I've known night time temperatures get down well into single figures in mid September - although high 20's during the day.

The later you're out here in September, the further south I'd be inclined to go - and certainly no further north than the Loire as a rule - and preferably no further north than the Dordogne from mid September.
