I think people are reading far too much into this. No one batted an eyelid at Santander when we landed, stamp passport and go. IF, and it’s a big if, you are checked then they will just confiscate what’s not supposed to be there. It’s personal choice. If the regular bed wetters on here want to obey the rules to the nth degree, crack on. Me, I’m happy to take the stuff I like and not one wink of sleep will be lost.

We have spent many years holidaying in France and like you we have never found a satisfactory replacement for mature cheddar cheese. The nearest we we have come to a reasonable substitute is a cheese called Laguiole or sometimes called Tome Laguiole. (Wikepedia describes its origins)
It is quite expensive when compared to UK cheese but it can be found in the larger supermarkets.

We are in Spain at moment and we can buy proper English cheddar and vintage at Lidl same as in uk Wyke valley cheese at similar price to uk yay!

There were plenty of douanes hanging around just after passport control at the tunnel when we crossed a few weeks ago, and they stopped the van in front of us which seemed to have some kind of off-road/non-road legal motorbike in it....I'm guessing the guy didn't have the right paperwork because after about 10 mins faffing around blocking the passport control queues they pulled him off to the side. But we weren't checked, or even asked about our fridge contents. I guess they have bigger fish to fry.

As it happened we changed our plans and travelled earlier, so as a result we were able to get to a supermarket before it closed and didn't need to anything with us apart from our lunch (which we ate in the tunnel).
