We used the tunnel on the way out this time and came back Cherbourg-Portsmouth.
Almost a three hour delay on the tunnel (Tuesday midday crossing), no explanation. Once loaded it's quick and efficient, no issues with inspections at either end - quick and courteous.
We like the simplicity and enjoy the stopovers on the way to our destination (which in recent years has varied from Brittany to the Vendee and the Dordogne) but for the cost, the delays are becoming unacceptable. Last year we came back through the tunnel during the heatwave and were stuck at Calais for more than three hours. By a stroke of luck we were parked near trees so had some shade, but people with small children and dogs were really struggling.
We have used the Dover-Calais ferry (2016 was the most recent) but found it overcrowded, with terrible coffee and snacks. When you'd driven from the Midlands coffee and snacks are important !
We've used Caen and Cherbourg a lot in the past but this was the first time on the ferry from Cherbourg. It was very quiet so we had plenty of space in the nice lounges, and on BF ship, the Galicia, the restaurants were Spanish, offering fabulous food. Great Duty Free shop too!
I hate Newhaven-Dieppe with a passion, I know it's a lot cheaper but the food is awful and the seating areas cramped and uncomfortable.
