60cm dish, twin lnb, Freesat Humax recorder. About 60k south of Tour.

I think 60k south of Tour would have you in Africa somewhere?

Funny I thought that, you just beat me to it.

Yep Kelper thanks for your kind words.

I think the way forward for campers and caravaners alike is the Starlink portable system, they have now released a compact portable system intended for mobile use, of course it only works when you are static but you know what I mean.

Starlink Roam uses a mini antenna just 10" (30cm) square designed even for back pack use, so perfect for campers.

Unfortunately though the subscription is over £100 each month, which makes it mostly for professional use only, they just need to get that down to £20 per month before it is no longer a niche product, great system though and hats of to Starlink for getting it to market.

If it's affordable Starlink will be the way to go. In theory with global coverage you won't need phone masts!( If they can make it work in moving vehicles!) Can't see mobile phone companies liking that!

Starlink has got deals already with terrestrial telecom firms, it means the signal gets beamed down to were there is no infrastructure due to cost of laying fibre, so it's a win win all round.

What I noticed about Starlink Roam Mini, is that even though the monthly subscription is expensive, you can pause it for monthly segments, so in theory that would work out quite cost effective if you just needed the service whilst you were over in Europe camping etc for maybe just a month or two.

We have 02 sim only deals( ex Virgin mobile ) and found it great in France. Most places had 4G coverage. We get a good data allowance and no roaming fees.
The Starlink would be useful for TV and phone as you say. Just pay fir a couple of months!

I have now managed to live stream France TV en direct ... a free service ... so have been watching Olympics on my MacBook Pro.
Of course it's wifi dependent so picture not as good as a dish .... but not bad ... I do use a wifi boost to help the campsite signal.

The deal buster is .... nothing to buy and free service.

I forgot to mention, that if using Starlink Roam Mini whilst outside of the UK, you will need to use a VPN as Starlink will know your location if say in France and block UK content, but a VPN will allow you to watch UK content.

Good to see you back Francais I trust you and the xyl are well! I've just had a very near miss trying to sign up for a VPN service which advertised huge discounts and then was about to charge for 3 years straight off. Luckily I have to authorise online payments via my banking app else I'd have been out £171 !!

Thanks' David, it's been a pretty tough year or so, lost my brother (72) last year to Alzheimer's, and the xyl, had an injury that left her in a coma for a couple of weeks, the result of that was 6 months in hospital and a series of brain operations for her, not had her home for 16 months now, but there is light at the end of the tunnel, as she has made an amazing recovery, although has been left with significant brain damage.
hopefully she can go to France next year, although travel insurance might be a challenge, as I am not sure UKGHI card (EHIC) will cut the mustard.

Back to the TV thing, I thought there might be a catch with using some VPN's case of buyer beware, and avoid those offering VPN for free.

To be fair I am sad that using regular satellite is almost at an end, I doubt SKY etc will continue via satellite when the ASTRA2 fleet comes to an end, same for ASTRA1 and other DTH satellites up there.

If things had been done properly we could have had UK tv & radio available anywhere in Europe with a simple soft encryption service for UK TV licence holders, using a 35cm dish.
The French did it with there Francsat service, so I feel badly let down by the UK powers that be.

Although Starlink does now offer a solution, albeit at a cost and the VPN issue, but of course you also get the full benefit of broadband, so I guess that is progress, and I am sure given time Starlink will become more affordable.

Have been as far south as Bordeaux and can report no problems with Freesat channels on spot beam.

I am furious that I bought a Humax digital satellite box for this trip which went *its up near Angers.

I had to break out the Tevion Aldi box which I bought 15 or so years ago and it worked - good old faithful.

As they have started to migrate the main channels to HD which the old Aldi box doesn't support we've had limited channels to watch but at least better than nothing that the new box would have offered!! grrrrr!!

Further research has thrown up that if you give the new Humax box connectivity to the internet so it can report back to the mothership it will work.

Bugger that! I'll return it to the South American River people I got it from with a suitable critique for the benefit of thoe who choose to read them.

For Francais, neither the range nor quality of 28.5 has changed in the last 10 years. So sat to home still exists if not in the quality or quantity that some of us would wish!

BTW any news of Vin Blanc?

David

We use a satellite dish when away in the caravan, so how would we get the necessary Sky Sports if satellite TV goes?

I’m guessing here Mrs Bonce but they will have to bring down the cost of satellite internet considerably if they wish to dispense with satellites. Satellites ain’t cheap and wear out so it costs a fortune to replace them - incentive enough for sky et al to find an alternative delivery mechanism. Needn’t worry for a few years yet Mrs Bonce
