Thanks for a most entertaining thread!!
We have done the Rouen route a number of times and never got it right. We've now given up and take Pont de Normandie and Rennes going West and have had success on the Evreux way going South. This year we're taking a detour via Gournay-en-Bray then Dreux before making it around to the free A20 and the South.
Lots of coss country sightseeing, minimum tolls and plenty of time - we hope!
