So does our Michelin atlas - with the positions of speed cameras indicated on the map. The locals generally warn us of the temporary ones by flashing their lights to indicate 'trap or police ahead'! Our latest Michelin also indicates the location of fuel stations, which we've generally found are the larger ones which are caravan accessible.

Isn't the 'illegal' version the one with radar which detects camera positions, rather than the normal version, which just has the camera positions pre-programmed into the software.

ok guys....we have now purchased road maps for france, spain & portugal. That's sorted. The next thing is...what sat nav to buy? My hubby is convinced we need a "snooper" that allows you to put the dimensions of your motorhome in but they are nearly £300!!!! Surely we don't need anything that fancy do we?

Hi,

I drove to Spain last year and found the sat nav to be excellent, I use a TOMTOM Live which gives me everything I need, including live traffic and camera detection. I also used the facility for avoiding the toll roads and ended up on superb roads, the only toll I paid was crossing the Milou Bridge. There is also the added bonus of google search if you require anything specific in the area you are in i.e. make specific garage.

I had maps and would look at them the night before and try and guess which route the sat nav would take me...kept me amused...sad old git I know...lol

Regards

Bob

Isn't a snooper a radar detector? If it is then these are illegal in France and you can get a hefty fine 1000's of euros and the snooper being confiscated.

Speed camera detection on a sat nav is different as they use a downloaded database rather than actual radar detection.

No it's not a radar detector, just a fancy sat nav!

No, you don't and, personally, I'd be very doubtful of it's ability to keep you clear of narrow roads etc.

I've said this before but unless the sat nav knows the width of all the roads ALONG THEIR ENTIRE LENGTH, then it's no good. My sat-nav sent me down a road once which looked OK at the start but 2 miles in, it turned into a single lane nightmare

For the sat-nav to have all that data, you'd need a huge amount of memory space on your device and route planning would take forever, as there would be so much data to process (I'm a computer programmer, I know how the thing would have to work).

If you look at the Snooper website, it seems to suggest (well, to me anyway) that all it will do is route you round any fixed width restrictions (the ones where you have to drive through a set of bollards) - how often do you see those? And it will warn you (NOT route around, just warn you) of steep hills and tight bends.

I've never used one but I'd be interested to hear from someone who's got one and can prove it works - plan a route where the shortest route is down a single lane and see what the Snooper does.

On any other sat-nav, make sure you select 'Fastest route' in the settings menu - this will always try and take you on A-roads and motorways. If you want the scenic route (and you're not towing), select 'shortest route' and then you'll be taken down some 'interesting' routes
