Under similar circumstances, would the AA have done the same?

So sorry I didn't reply to this!
No, we don't pay any extra for recovery ... however, the breakdown/recovery insurance is for UK and NI only .... when we travel on the continent we take out supplimentary cover (which is considerably less than the cost of buying cover from any other source).
The Santander Premium account also provides travel insurance, including for pre-existing medical conditions, and is effective until you reach 80 years of age, after which you pay a £50 supplement. Medical expenses abroad cover is up to £10 million. (No cover for anything beyond Grade 2 rivers ... so not white water kayaking!)

Six years ago ... camping in Italy ... daughter had a serious cycle accident ... split upper lip and dislodged two front teeth and gums ... ambulance rushed her to nearest hospital (20 km) ... immediate operation ... stayed in for three days, including OH with full board ... didn't even ask us for medical card or paperwork ... all absolutely free ... and a superb job result and service. We were so impressed!

When we had a Santander Account with Travel Insurance they did not cover all pre-existing conditions without extra cost.  My husband has Crohn's Disease - although he has had no medical intervention since 1997 - and they would not cover him unless we paid extra.

Absolutely right ... I think you do pay extra for some pre-existing ... but, this may still work out cheaper than a stand alone cover?

Update on unoccupancy for a Saga policy

Saga agrees that the wording means 60 consecutive days of non occupation. An authorised person staying one night sets the countdown back to zero, so you then have a further 60 days. They further said that if this was the method you employed, there was no need to notify them .

Update:
Major change to Santander European cover rate on Premium Account.
Santander have switched to RAC for their UK cover (Was Green Flag).
Upgrade to European cover with Green Flag was about £55 ... with RAC ... to-day's quote ... nearly an eye-watering £200!
ADAC is miles better value!

Am I still winning?  I pay about £70 a year extra with my normal car insurance for breakdown/recovery as part of the package. In UK it's with RAC, in Europe it's sub contracted to the likes of ADAC.  Not as all embracing as Red Pennant, I'm well aware of that, but it does what it says on the tin - breakdown service and recovery, limited car hire, and certain defined expenses.

Not much difference with the post above from Colmax, though with a different company.
