We have ADAC which we took out specifically for use abroad, as RAC are very expensive. However, for peace of mind we also have our RAC coverage which renews shortly. I WAS going to cancel RAC, now not so sure, especially as OH might well get in a tizz if he was alone and had to call ADAC. Am I stupid to have both covers or does anyone else?

Anne

Hi, You certainly are not stupid, as I said earlier the only reason we take out these breakdown insurances is for "Piece Of Mind", I'm sure we all hope that we will never have to use them and that piece of mind is what you really pay for.

As for whether or not to continue with ADAC, all I would say is I am a member and will continue for as long as they will have me, as I am quiet aware of any possible drawback, but believe they are a great company and will provide me with the service I need e.g. that all important "Piece Of Mind"

I would suggest that money shouldn't be a major question, its always got to be that "Piece Of Mind" as no matter how big the saving may be, if you are driving around with a doubt, you really aren't getting value for the money you are looking for.

Hope that makes some sense

My husband and I have ADAC cover for our overseas trips.   We also have RAC breakdown recovery for the whole family through Tesco clubcard points. The RAC covers all 5 of us in the UK. You are not alone Mrs Bonce!

For our purposes that combination worked out the best value.

I'm another one with multiple Recovery policies, albeit that the UK based one is part of our bank benefits.

We joined ADAC a few years ago purely for their coverage in Europe when we are towing our caravan. At the time, we couldn't find anyone offer inning comparable cover at the same low cost.

I wonder if it would be possible for ADAC to only cover UKers when in Europe?

I also wonder why they are restricting their membership. Whether it is due to the AA/RAC stamping their feet about losing customers but still having to provide the assistance, or other financial pressures.

Just a point worth noting.
Though you may think you are covered via your Bank Relay and Recovery service, DOUBLE CHECK IT.
I was going to upgrade my nationwide account to their top card service which offers lots of benefits for £10 a month, one of which was UK & EU Breakdown Insurance.
However on closer examination, it doesnt cover Motorhomes or Campers. It does cover Caravans and trailers but not Campervans.

Hi, There was a report on another forum that appeared to suggest if you have too many claims on ADAC they reduce your membership down to just Germany, I can't confirm that but that is certainly what appeared to be being suggested.

The other part about Bank insurance cover, as VWT4 suggests, it really is worth studying the small print not just for breakdown cover but all of the cover they appear to offer ?FREE/Included? especially the travel insurance and also make sure if you have any medical conditions you let them know.

It would be very interesting to know, if ADAC do eventually get around to refusing membership to new UK citizens, just whether this would be legal under European Law, any solicitors out there who would like to comment ?

It would be very easy for them to do that as they could claim, quite correctly, that the UK is outside their geographical limits.  I think it should be remembered that ADAC have never actively promoted their services to recruit UK members. It just happened that a few cottoned on to the fact that you could join the organisation and get cheap cover. The promotion has come from people who had the cover and encouraged others to join as well, not realising that the situation was unsustainable. Once they started to get a significant increase in UK call outs there quickly realised that they were onto a loser no doubt leading to the current change of policy.
