I agree, and at different times, or with different destinations, one option is often better than the other.
We've used a whole lot of routes: in the old days the SallyLine to Ostend, Newhaven to Dieppe, and more recently Dover/Calais or Dunkerque, Portsmouth/Caen and the Tunnel.
We find the cheapest option is best for our present circumstances - a long journey from Yorkshire, a late evening ferry from Dover, and a first overnight in France. If we're late there's always another ferry The alternatives are ruled out because:
1. Tunnel - we don't use Tesco vouchers so too expensive 2. Newhaven - poor timings for our journeys 3. Portsmouth/Plymouth - cost and lack of confidence that we can get there without an overnight stay near the port. We've nearly missed our ferry on both occasions despite leaving plenty of time. 4. Hull - too expensive 5. Newcastle - too expensive
With all the longer crossings the ferry fare alone would be enough to pay our site fees for two/three even four weeks - so there's no competition.
