When the tunnel is closed...

As we hit Rouen on the way down (12th June) we met, for the first time, the dreaded tunnel closed signs. So as we weren't in any particular hurry thought i'd follow the signs... they suggested use diversion route S1 on the early warning signs further up the motorway then it became S2. So got off at the last possible exit (where a lot of drivers were getting off and typically french going round the exit roundabout and getting back on again... so either the workers blocking the mway at that point were "working to rule" and just blocking that one bit, or they were just a bit dim, or the tunnel had reopened who knows...)

Followed the yellow arrow S2 signs into rouen a little way, up and over the hill, back onto the motorway just before Pont Mathilde and back on our way. easy peasy!!...

There wasn't much traffic

Only minor concern was a couple of hairpin bends coming down the other side. We were towing a 7m van and no problem at all just slowed down enough.

So hey ho another "myth busted"... like the M25!

I had always used the well trodden route through Rouen until the bridge was closed and then we used the Yvetot route and over the Pont Brotonne. I'm a convert to that now and wouldn't go back to the dark arts of Rouen for love nor money.

Can I ask why?

And, how much longer in both time and miles is it?

Just done a check via AA Routes, from where we are in the Vendee up to Zeebrugge, both via Rouen and the Pont..seems its 7 miles longer via the Pont but exactly the same in time!!..Seems a lot less stressful and for 7 miles its the route I`ll use in the future

Well we are back from our French trip and can safely say Rouen was easy. Followed the tips given on here and we breezed through. The return was good as well, even though it was 5.30pm on a saturday.

Pleased you didn't have any issues !!

I really don't understand why Rouen seems to be portrayed as an issue, yes its usually busy with a lot of traffic but its pretty straightforward - I know when the bridge was 'out' it was more of an issue but even then it was well signposted !!

it seems as though its on the list of telling newbies about driving through france - drive on the right, make sure you've got yellow surcoats, stick to the speed limits as the cameras will now be used to track down UK vehicles AND avoid Rouen, its a hell hole rat trap of traffic LOL
