The situation is pretty volatile, but the economy in the Eurozone is behind ours in the economic cycle, so as it deteriorates the pound may recover a bit of ground against the Euro. One euro to the pound just seems wrong somehow!

This is the best bit of news that I've seen all day - Thanks James - that's cheered me immeasurably

Hi billy.

Where have you been, have a look at the BBC text, the Tourist rate is now 1.0086 Euro's for your £, and Monday is yet to come, I think next week could well be the week when we see the headline "Euro now worth more than the £" well I am hoping it won't happen, but I bet the media can't wait.

For one, I'm sorry for you people...

...on the other hand we got our pounds for next years holidays yesterday, at an exchangerate of 1,12€ for the pound... In for a cheapy holiday

If it's rezession, what we've got at the mo, I say, we need more of it (in Germany), at least at the moment, I haven't felt as good for many years - finance wise...Although I have to admit, that we've been through it, when the Euro started. All the prices going up and our money being worth nothing.

Last year I discussed the money topic with my friends all over Britain and told them in advance, that if the pound
would go down, it would at least partly be a setup of your government, to force you people into Euro-zone. They always wanted to be part of it. Usually my friends loughed and would say that I have not the real insight into British economy and thinking - they lough no more.

Don't get me wrong, I never wanted the Euro and still I'm not happy with it (I even used to have a sticker "KEEP THE POUND" on the back of my car) but it looks like our government at least did a few things right.

About Hungary: We've been there twice (My father was born there) but we're not coming back. CROWDED with Germans and it's geting ever more expensive and local people geting more unfriendly and after the money...

Anyway, Welcome to Eurozone Great Britain!

Markus

Maybe Herman, The pound will go so low that many of the manufacturing jobs that have been moved to Germany over the last 10 years will start to return to the UK.

But even with the low euro it will not stop me touring Deutschland again in July 09.

Just come back from Dublin (how expensive is that place!!) and the Euro was 0.98 to the £. All the shops had sales and some were even offering an extra 10% on top of their discounts due to the low rate of the Euro. Did anyone see the news where they were showing the queues of shoppers going from southern Ireland across the border to northern Ireland to buy their shopping?

Not getting any better.

Some pretty dismal forecasts on UK economy in the year ahead.  Unless Europe do something to lower the value of their currency against other currencies it might be better to buy now while you can still get a euro note for your £ note and not a handful of cents.

Any bets on the exchange rate for £1 by June next year?

My guess is 87cents! That would be a drop of 14% from today and about 40% from a couple of years ago.

It's dropped 7 cents since this thread started and that's less than 3 weeks

The official rate is 1€ = 87.4p at the moment, so getting better & it hasnt got worse after the cut in interest rates yesterday, you wont get that if you actually change money but its a long time until July.

Well that's certainly going generally in the right direction.  Do you think the French will be actively cancelling their UK holidays?

On the telly the other night talking to UK holiday cottage owners they said their summer bookings from German customers were well up & the Germans were insisting on paying in full now in case the £ had risen against the € by the summer.
