A word of warning about speed limits! Now that the 'National Speed limit' which was brought down to 90 km/h for single carriageway roads has been all but abandoned, there is a huge amount of confusion about exactly what speed you should be doing and where! Some such roads are now signposted 90kph again, some remain at 80 km/h - and on some the authorities appear to have given up and there are even poles but with no 'lollypop' at the top!

There are also increasing numbers of villages where the 'Priorite a Droite' appears to have been formalised with the painting of 'give way' signage at the junctions with every small road coming into a main road - sometimes meaning ten or even twenty such junctions on one stretch of road. Traversing some villages is now a bit of a nightmare!

Fortunately, as usual, we didn't see any speed guns - and generally stuck to the same speed as other motorists!

We did notice on our recent visit that there were lots of brand new 80 signs around. Maybe they ran out of them?!

No, some of what were 80 kph on our last visit, have now been replaced with 90 kph again - but others haven't! The signs now also conflict with the information on our SatNav.

Apparently it's now up to departments, (or perhaps even communes?), to decide on the appropriate speed limit for their area! Very strange and impossible to actually work out what speed you should be doing on any particular stretch. It's perhaps best to stick to 80 kph at all times if you want to be sure of avoiding a fine.

Another one to watch out for, they are replacing the "fixed cameras" with average speed cameras. noticed this on the A20 south of Limoges yesterday.
