Wow! That's a heck of a statement, Bramston!

Based on research? Insider knowledge?

Certainly in the restaurant trade they would place the rotgut as the second/third cheapest on the winelist.

In that way the customer did not look too much of a miser to his guest when ordering

I was told it by a former supermarket section manager. Avoid a low priced wine not on special offer. The cheapest wine in a supermarket is always on special offer.

Cheapest wine in French supermarkets round here is usually mass produced Spanish plonk, followed by big French brands eg Roche Mozet, then IGP (used to be vin de Pays).

Special offers aren't always the cheapest although they can be very good value for money (see previous posts re: Lidl wine fair).

In the local restaurants there is usually a house wine sourced locally which is cheapest (eg round here one from the vines in a Bergerac vineyard that aren't old enough to be classed as AOC yet), followed by local and regional AOC's (Bergerac, Cahors etc), then Rhones, Bordeaux's and finally Burgundies.

In St Emilion we sat on the terrace of one of the 'tourist trap' restaurants in the main square drinking their bargain priced superb house rose and tried to imagine having a similar experience in a London tourist hotspot. We couldn't, which is one reason we return to France time and again!

Maybe not the best "Foire aux Vins" but certainly the most amusing I've seen since moving to France.

The national garden centre chain "Gamm Vert" are having a wine fair starting tomorrow until 13 October. A good hundred plus wines on offer.

So if you're buying a chain saw, lawn mower, or just bulbs / seeds / compost, you can also pick up a case of 6 IGP Cotes de Gascogne red, white or rose for 18 euro.

Has no-one here discovered the NOZ chain of shops. They buy up excess stock and last years bin-ends, not just wine but household, gardening, food, and such and some of their prices are incredible.
I had never come across them till a few weeks ago in Moissac, the shops all tend to have different stock but they are well worth a visit even if it is a bit like shopping in Netto when they were in the UK.
Two weeks ago I bought some 6 year old Madiran for 2.99 euros, really good, but at the same time picked up some 3 litre boxes of Hardys Shiraz still in excellent condition for 3.99 euros, that is 1 euro a bottle.

I did say it is a bit like Netto in the old days.

A first time for everything - have bought non-French wine in France!
But at 3.71 euro a bottle (when buying a case of 6) the Freixenet Cordon Negro Cava in LeClerc's "Foire aux Vins" was just too good to miss. That's sorted a few Christmas presents.

Non-French - - I actually bought some wine from Moldova in France this year. I had never come across it in 30 years in the wine business and thought I should try it. Very good it was too.

We bought some red in India while were there - it had a picture of a chap in a feathered head dress and was simply labelled Red Indian.
