We were there when our kids were young 20 years ago and we liked it very much and also the area.  Sorry I can't update you on the site but I'm sure it is still as good.

hi

We went 17 years ago with our 4 children it was a lovely quiet site in a great location near both beach and mountains.  We have booked to go again for July/August this year and it will be just the two of us we hope it hasn't changed. Sometimes the weather can be unpredictable so we are hoping it will be ok. Am interested to hear what anyone has to say about how they have found the site more recently.

I should have asked about the best things to see and do around the area as well.  I fancy a day trip to Spain seeing as it's not so far away.  Also, we are planning on taking the bikes - is it good for safe cycling around there?  We will have 4 kids aged 3 - 10 with us.

You've said the weather can be unpredictable - do I just pack an extra jumper or are we talking rain coat & wellies!

Hi

(First time on the web for a fortninght, so only just spotted your post)

We went to Col last year. I think there have been other posts on here about this site, so maybe do a search.

We did have some heavy rain, and because the site is hilly, some campers dug gullies into their pitches to stop their pitches from flooding. Take a waterproof coat, and your folding spade!

We did have a lot of glorious weather too! Beach at Hendaye probably the best of the nearby ones.

Overall a nice site, nice atmosphere, nice (if basic) pool. Down side being that many pitches are on the small side, and it's a drive to go anywhere at all. Also, the site is on a fairly fast road, so not one I'd cycle along with kids.

The "village" of Col, at the top of a nearby hill (some would say mountain) with a long, steep, winding approach road is worth a trip. It's just a collection of large, slightly odd shops though, and a cheap petrol station.

Day trip to Spain will be no problem, and I'd recommend San Sebastian, which has a lovely old town. I think there's a big retail park at Irun, but that's not really my bag.

Other things in the area include the mountain railway up La Rhune. Again there have been lots of posts about that, so have a search. St Jean de Luz is a lovely town, but traffic and parking can be a nightmare. There's a large Leclerc's just past Urrugne from the site, and that's where thr bad traffic starts at peak times, both ways.

Hope that helps. Post again if there's anything else you want to know.

TT.

When we went years ago you could go on some lovely walks directly out of a gate at the back of the site, we are really hoping this is still the case as we decided to go back because we thought we would go walking on the 'off'  weather days. One year we were in this area on a site nearer the beach and it wasn't so good when the weather wasn't hot enough for the beach.

We remember the roads to towns being very busy but the smaller inland roads being quiet. Great to hear from someone who has visited recently because we were a bit worried the site might have become more commercialised and noisy.
