We are considering touring NZ for a month by motor home next year and looking for first-hand experiences/recommendations with regard to hiring. Have searched the forum with nil result. Looked at various NZ web sites for motor home hire (Maui, Britz etc). Although there are only the two of us, I cannot see a two-berth motor home that has a bed long enough :( I am 1.90m tall and in motor homes such as the Hi-Top van, the bed is 1.8m long. Hiring a 4-berth with a 2.1m long bed is likely to cost upwards of NZ$230 per day.
Responses from those with first-hand experience would be very welcome!
Thanks,

Use the search facility above and put in New Zealand in the first column and then click on caravanning and camping abroad and it will give you 3 posts on New Zealand. The last one with 26 replies was in Jan. 2007
Our neighbours are just back from a seven week tour of NZ in a camper van. Had a brilliant time, used a four berth camper. What they said was, if they were going to do it again, they would hire a car instead as they could stay in log cabins on the camp sites for cheaper than it was to use the van. Said the place is to die for and the most friendliest people they have ever met. Good luck
I read somewhere else that bed and breakfast worked out cheaper than motorhomes. I suppose it depends how big a motorhome it is and how long you want it for. We are going out to stay with our son who has just emigrated (for 3 months from 1/12/2007) and can't wait.

Can't speak for motorhomes, but we spent two and a half months there in 2003 with a tent and had a fantastic time, great campsites (nearly all have kitchens, only used the trangia when hiking or felt like cooking outside the tent), and lots of other options, such as the cabins, hostels and backpackers.
Would agree with MickeyM's neighbours about the country and the people.
