I have Xenon lights with a clear cover, i.e. no markers to show where to put the adapters.   I have always followed the instructions with the official Renault branded ones I bought some time ago. These are the "beam bender" type so they actually deflect the spot of light rather than block it out completely like solid tape would do.

I drive about 2 metres away from a wall/garage door, out the lights on (dipped). You will see two spots of light shining on the wall, where the main bit of beam is concentrated.   Hold the "beam bender" up to the headlight and move it around until this spot of light disappears and the beam is spread out. You need to have it the correct way up to deflect the beam in the right direction too, if I remember rightly.

This has always seemed the easiest way of doing it, to me - but I do resent paying £8 or whatever they are every time we go abroad to replace them.   You would have though the car manufacturers would have come up with a better solution by now. I know Vauxhall Omegas have a manual switch at the back of the headlight which changes them to continental use - what a great idea.

Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!

This is a reply from the beam deflector manufacturers

Hi Gary

Many thanks for your email..this (and our discussions with John) have drawn our attention to a couple of discrepancies in our instruction sheet. The net result of this is we have re-visisted our local Ford dealer's 'used car' section to look at Mondeo's of different ages..and to carry out a detailed re-test of all their headlights.

From this, we have completely re-appraised the Mondeo, and whilst both diagram 127 and diagram 6 achieve a good 'dazzle removal' from the beam pattern, they both compromise the remainder of the beam intensity more than we would like. As a result of this our re-test has shown that fitting position 23 is actually the optimium for ALL Mondeo's with 'halogen' lights.
We will now be altering our packaging information to reflect this.

Thanks again for helping to bring this to our attention, and please feel free to contact me on the number below if you wish to discuss this in any greater detail.

Enjoy your trip.

Kind regards

I have seen people cut up GB stickers for headlamp masking

Carefree issue new ones every year/trip

Right shape, but I wouldn't fancy sticking them to my headlamps......
