We normally pay french tolls at the manned boothes but with a credit card.  It is quicker and easier to lean right out of your window to hand over a card rather than coins or paper money.

We went through the toll booths last year and when we went through an un-maned one, I put the money in (as hubby was driving) and waited for the ticket.  It didn't come out and I started to get concerned.  I eventually got out of the car and spotted the ticket coming out of a slot much higher up.  We had the bikes on the roof of the car and there must have been some sort of sensor that thought we were an HGV!

We chuckled to ourselves the first few times the same thing happened to us.

Usually just use credit cards at the manned booths - have to use the manned booths anyway as the bikes are on the roof so we're too high for the automated booths. Much quicker with cards and you don't have to bother scrapping around for change.

If you have to undo your seat belt at the tolls for any reason, make sure you fasten it again before you even think about driving on

Yes.  Sometimes there are police standing the other side of a booth and we've seen them pull cars over.  It was only later that we heard from some Brits that they'd been fining people for not belting up!

we always use our debit card on all the tolls in france and spain. Not only is it easier, but you tend to get a better exchange rate.  we also bank with nationwide, and had no problem at tolls and petrol stations.  We even used the card at an unmanned pump.  with chip n pin it's easy, n you can choose english directions at the pumps so it was quite easy to fill up. hope this helps
