I am having some bother deciding on the best route to Tarragona spain, leaving from Calais. We will be towing and will try to get there over two days with one overnight stop.I dont fancy the paris route and have used Mappy to try other routes, now I am just confused! Can anyone tell me which is the best way down ie quickest with least miles,no mountains,or tolls ( i wish)!I am not too worried about staying on motorways but would like to see something from behind the wheel other than le trucker!

I have Sat Nav but have found it not too caravan friendly when in europe recently.

Advice would be greatfully appreciated.

Suggest Calais-Rouen-Chartres-Clermont Ferrand-Millau-Beziers-Perpignan-Tarragona would suit.  ViaMichelin suggests distance is just under 900 miles.  Tolls (for cars) around 80 €.  Mostly motorways, going this way many of them toll free.

And you get to go over the amazing Millau viaduct.

suggest calais-reims-troyes-dijon-lyon-orange-beziers-perpignan-tarragona would suit.We have been doing this route for a few years now and it is easy going.

Nothing wrong with Lyon route except that the Clermont Ferrand way would be a bit cheaper because of the toll free parts of the autoroutes  (Abbeville to Rouen, C Ferrand to Beziers except for the Millau viaduct).  Going via Lyon would be on pay roads almost all the way.

I suspect C Ferrand route may be marginally shorter as well, although the driving time would probably be about the same.

We Travelled via the milau viaduct last year to near perpignan, we found the constant up/down from Clermont Ferrand to beziers a bit too much for my outfit. I will look at the places suggested and try to get the best way out of them.

We have also tried the Motorail but was scared of using it again as most of the cars on our train were damaged including mine!

Thanks for the suggestions, keep em coming.

Hi, Gary, dont be too bothered about the direct route thru Paris, done it many times and had no probs, best time late as poss, keep in 2nd lane and drive like the french do (aggressively) and dont miss your exit A10 towards Chatres,Orleans  pick up the N20/A20 Limoges, good overnighters at Soulliac, south to Toulouse-Narbonne and south to Le Perthus, but saying this, we used to make it a psrt of the holiday and we used to linger, or was it malinger, at Soulliac for awhile and took 3 days up and 3 down regards S/C

We have tried both Bill and Gary's route and found there to be very little difference.  Gary's route is a bit cheaper in tolls but we have found that Bill's route is a little bit quicker (but not much, maybe about an hour)  I am trying to think which route I preferred and I think to be honest I prefer the route over the Millau Viaduct as it really is spectacular!  We have never done it with one overnight stop though.  We always take two so we don't arrive absolutely exhausted.
