Suggest Calais-Rouen-Chartres-Clermont Ferrand-Millau-Beziers-Perpignan-Tarragona would suit.  ViaMichelin suggests distance is just under 900 miles.  Tolls (for cars) around 80 €.  Mostly motorways, going this way many of them toll free.

And you get to go over the amazing Millau viaduct.

Nothing wrong with Lyon route except that the Clermont Ferrand way would be a bit cheaper because of the toll free parts of the autoroutes  (Abbeville to Rouen, C Ferrand to Beziers except for the Millau viaduct).  Going via Lyon would be on pay roads almost all the way.

I suspect C Ferrand route may be marginally shorter as well, although the driving time would probably be about the same.

Hi, Gary, dont be too bothered about the direct route thru Paris, done it many times and had no probs, best time late as poss,keep in 2nd lane and drive like the french do (aggressively) and dont miss your exit A10 towards Chatres,Orleans  pick up the N20/A20 Limoges, good overnighters at Soulliac, south to Toulouse-Narbonne and south to Le Perthus,but saying this, we used to make it a psrt of the holiday and we used to linger, or was it malinger, at Soulliac for awhile and took 3 days up and 3 down regards S/C
