Get a Nationwide account as they do not charge you for using their card abroad. As far as I know they are the only one which does not charge. The exchange rate has always been good in the past too.
The machines are the same as UK ones. It will recognise that your card is foriegn and ask you what language you want to use first. If you dont have a Nationwide card you will be charged for each withdrawal and then charged for the foriegn transaction. With my bank this comes to about 5% so check your banks rates. The exchange rate you get is the prevailing rate your bank uses on the day the transaction hits their system.

Strictly not for cashpoints, but the Post Office credit card doesn't charge for overseas spending either. They will if you use it in a cash machine as it's a cash advance innit. But it might be just the job for any booze n fags you might be buying.

U can use your Master/Visa/whatever card for refueling and at many restaurants (or should I rather say some, for the country-side?) NOT accepted in any of the supermarkets, local dealers, butchers, bakerys, although almost all of them accept the "Maestro"-card.
