Have done this trip many times(not towing) and have always caught the overnight ferry to St Malo Which gets in around 7am and then take the rest of the day to get to site and vice versa..start early and drive up to port for an erly evening ferry. I am not sure on the ferry times now as we usually go via calais.
we are off to spain in the summer and are travelling from calais over two days but will be driving at night and resting in the afternoon, its a total of 927 miles !
Our friends reckon we are mad but having done southern france last year I am confident.

Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
Bryanbolton, we've stayed at Du Jard a few times, cracking site. The owner, (can't remember his name), is quite keen on "security" he has a security guard wandering around at night and the site barrier is locked from 23:00 to 07:00, unfortunatley your 04:00 dart would be a no-no. Have a good holiday we always do when there.
St Malo has a lovely old town so it would be worth heading up there the day before at a leisurely pace and doing a bit of sightseeing. Some nice restaurants in the old town as well to round off your holiday.
The journey will take at least 4 hours driving. 10.45am departure means getting there for 9.45 therefore setting off no later than 4.45. Rather you than me. Ther is a small campsite on the approach to St Malo just off the motorway - the Bel Event used by ferry travellers - OK for a night and within 30 mins of the ferry port. shoudl you decide to go this way, from there you are within easy striking distance of Dina, Dinard, Le Mont St Michel and of course the beautiful old town of St Malo. Personally, a no brainer.
I've always stayed in/near St Malo if I'm getting on the morning ferry - packing up is stressful enough without worrying about a four hour drive and being late for the ferry. There's a nice municipal at Dinan - La Hallerais - which is walking distance to the town and which has a swimming pool/play area, about 45 minutes out of St Malo. If you can do without all the whistles and bells, there's a good basic municipal site in St Malo itself (Cite d'Aleth) which is only about five minutes from the ferry port.
La Tranche sur Mer holds lots of lovely memories for our family - great markets, supermarkets and best of all lots of lovely places to eat!!!! We have always left early from La Tranche and rushed our visit to St Malo. Treat yourself and spend a bit of time at St Malo - it is truely beautiful. Take your time and explore the area. You will have a fantastic holiday in both places.
Thanks everyone, we have decided on a couple of nights in St Malo. Has anyone been to Camping de la Ville Huchet? Its on the outskirts of St Malo off the N137.
