Thinking of going to France, possibley south west? Went to Brittany and weather ok ish but not brill so thought wd go further down this time. Have trawled through posts on best sites in France etc but though would ask myself...we are a family of 5,  - 3 kids aged 16,15 and 10, would be looking for a site which is not too commercial..not bothered about entertainment every night tho occassionally wd be nice, with a pool, near sea/lake for body boarding/watersports and able to walk to town/village for shops and eats.  We can rent accomodation there or take our own tent, I don't mind. Nice toilets and showers too please:ie:clean!I know it's late in the season to book but not been able to sort it out til now...oh and wd be in the school hols in July/Aug!  So not asking much!!

If you go the last 2 weeks of our school hols the french will have gone home - prices/availability of mobilehomes/chalets to rent will be much better but I'd guess the best will have sold out in December. The other advantage of going then is our summer is fading by then but the sea/rivers are at their warmest and there isplenty of summer left south of the Loire. I'm not fond of the Vendee and I'd not go as far down as where the weather gets influenced by the Pyranees but the Biscarosse area suits me.

I agree with Tethers End the area around Biscarosse and Sanquient is excellent, lake is great and beach is nearby for body boarding and surfing. Would agree end of August best time to go if you arrive weekend of18/19 August prices should br slighty cheaper and campsites quieter and still gives you time to be home the weekenf before school starts, check out La rive and les Ecuriels some threads running at the moment on these sites.

hi

last year we did one week in loire and one week in charente, just to try out different places. this year we are going to loire for two weeks. charente nice for the beaches but too busy and the drives a real drag. loire not too far away and the weather was much better than brittany

Hi, have looked at some of the sites suggested by everyone and they all look good and thanks for all your help...but just one question, how French are they?  My French is school quality...not too good!  Thanks

Hi

Holiday Green has quite a mix of staff, speaking very good english/dutch/Italian

It now has a new indoor heated pool with slides which is quite handy for later in the season. We do have onsite managers for our mobile and they would also be able to help you with accomodation.all our contact details are on our own website. The south of France weather is possibly better that further up north too.

Good Luck

Mandy

Febe,

don't worry about your lack of French. As long as you smile, and start your sentence in Franch with a cheery 'Bonjour', and always say please & thankyou, you'll be fine. Just brush up on a few phrases before you arrive. The French are usually very forgiving, and will often want to practice their English on you in the tourist areas. Away from the tourist traps, in 'France Profonde', there's very little English spoken, but there's always sign language and drawings!

You'll love it, don't worry.

Agree with everything Stu said above.  A lot of sites will have someone in Reception that speaks English.  However if you would be happier on a British Owned site have a look here                                                    http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/results.asp?region=France&county=Poitou-Charentes.

It is inland and so no watersports although there is a beach/lake nearby that does watersports

I think Stu's site is fully booked at the time you want to go

La Rive and Les ecuriels both have english speaking staff on reception and also both have English camping companies on site so the couriers for these sites will be able to help even if you are not a client, but as Stu says if you try a bit of French people are very helpful.

I wouldn't go without the Caravan Club Europe book which has thousands of sites listed by area with members' comments and full descriptions - you don't have to be a member to buy one.  I can give further info if you want it.
