I have found that super market shops seem to use a french only credit card anyone know how to get one

They accept UK cards at the kiosk when open - never on Sundays in my experience.

Yes you are not likely to be able to get a french credit card so remember that you will only be able to fill up somewhere that has a kiosk which includes supermarkets (except on a sunday afternoon)

Only way to obtain a French debit card (credit cards are few & far between here in France) is to have a French bank account. You can open a French bank account online if you want to. Barclays have a French arm, it may be worth you asking them?

I thought there were bank charges for services on French current accounts even when in credit

There are, but they're so small as to be negilible really. It's mainly an 'assurance' for cards against theft etc. I think we pay abour €5/month for our account. The business one's the same.

I think I will stick with Nationwide then Stu and get free banking with interest but pay the extra few c on a Sunday should I need to fill up with a nun-supermarket fuel - Its the only time I have felt a French card/account would be an advantage.

It's not really worth having a French bank account if you're only going to use it for 3 weeks per year Huw, you're right to stick with your Nationwide account. But if you're over here alot, then it may just be worth thinking about. At least the option's there.

Indeed Stu - but thanks for the 'local' knowledge - IIRC the kiosk is open at supermarket fuel stations in the more 'touristy' areas - but I always play safe and fill up last thing on Saturday if 'on the move'.
